The SKF 6204/C4 deep-groove ball bearing measures 20 × 47 × 14 mm and compensates for operational thermal expansion thanks to its significantly increased radial clearance.
The SKF 6204/C4 single-row deep groove ball bearing is designed for applications where radial loads act within a confined space. With an inside diameter of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 47 mm and a width of 14 mm, this rolling bearing complies with the Explorer performance class. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel and fitted with a sheet steel cage, the open design covers operating temperatures from –20 to +150 degrees. This design combines dimensional accuracy to Class P6 with running accuracy to Class P5.
The open deep groove ball bearing is primarily used in designs where lubricant is supplied from the outside via the housing. Thanks to its unobstructed design without integrated sealing washers, the lubricant reaches the raceways and balls directly. Typical applications include assemblies with external sealing where operating heat acts on the bearing. The rolling bearing accommodates radial forces as well as axial loads in both directions, whilst the flangeless cylindrical outer ring allows for installation in standard housings.
The designation C4 indicates a significantly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This variant is recommended when temperature differences between the rotating shaft and the housing cause the inner ring to expand. Sufficient operating clearance reduces the risk of seizing or thermal overload. Furthermore, tight press fits require more radial clearance prior to assembly. The combination of C4 bearing clearance and tight manufacturing tolerances – P6 for dimensions and P5 for running accuracy – ensures low-vibration operation during service.
The bearing has a bore of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 47 mm and a width across flats of 14 mm. These standardised key dimensions enable it to be fitted precisely into standardised housings and onto corresponding shafts. The single-row roller bearing has a cylindrical outer ring without a flange or groove.
The designation C4 indicates a significantly increased radial clearance. The radial clearance between the balls and the raceways is greater than in standard designs or C3 bearings. As a result, the bearing reduces the risk of stress if the shaft becomes very hot during operation or if tight fits reduce the bearing clearance after press-fitting.
This bearing combines dimensional accuracy to Class P6 with finer running accuracy to Class P5. Both classes exceed the standard level. They result in lower concentricity errors, reduce vibrations during operation and promote even load distribution, which enhances smooth running, particularly in demanding industrial drives.
Open bearings have neither sealing rings nor cover plates, allowing lubricants such as oil or grease to circulate freely and enabling dirt particles to be flushed out. They are suitable for enclosed housings with external sealing. The absence of contacting sealing lips also minimises frictional resistance and prevents additional frictional heat.
The permissible operating range extends from -20 to +150 degrees. The standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel used and the robust sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. To ensure safe operation, the chosen lubricant – whether grease or oil – must also be suitable for these temperatures.
Both the rings and the rolling elements are made of standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). This material is designed for mechanical strength and wear resistance. The rolling elements are guided by a sheet steel cage, which is designed for the specified temperature range.
