The SKF 6316 /C4 deep groove ball bearing, with an 80 mm bore and increased C4 bearing clearance, provides thermal clearance for demanding shaft mountings.
The 6316 /C4 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing designed for predominantly radial loads as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. SKF manufactures this model from standard rolling bearing steel (100Cr6) with a sheet steel cage. As an open design without integrated seals, the construction allows direct access to lubricant via the housing and remains dimensionally stable within a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees. With a tolerance class of P0/PN (equivalent to ABEC 1), the bearing is suitable for standard industrial fit systems.
This rolling bearing is primarily used where significant temperature differences occur between the shaft and the housing during operation. Typical applications include bearing arrangements involving thermal expansion of the shaft or rapidly changing operating conditions. As the outer ring is designed without a flange or ring groove, the component fits easily into cylindrical housing bores. The open design allows for flexible lubrication with oil or housing grease, tailored to the rotational speed and environmental conditions.
Bearing clearance class C4 has a noticeably greater radial clearance than standard clearance or C3. When inner rings are mounted on the 80 mm shaft with a tight press fit, the inevitable expansion of the raceway reduces the bearing clearance once installed. Additional heating of the shaft during operation further reduces this clearance. The significantly increased C4 bearing clearance accommodates these dimensional changes and helps to prevent internal stresses and premature overheating of the rolling elements.
This roller bearing has an inside diameter of 80 mm, an outside diameter of 170 mm and a width across flats of 39 mm. The outer ring has a cylindrical end, without a flange or groove. These standardised key dimensions allow for direct mounting on suitable shaft sections and in standardised housing bores in mechanical engineering.
The designation C4 indicates a significantly increased radial bearing clearance, greater than the standard clearance and greater than class C3. This increased operating clearance is designed to compensate for significant oversizes during press-fitting, as well as thermal expansion resulting from temperature differences between the inner and outer rings, without the bearing seizing up during operation.
As the bearing is supplied without contact seals or cover plates, lubrication via the housing system is required. Depending on the speed and load, you can use grease or circulating lubricating oil. External sealing elements on the housing cover protect the interior from contamination and help to minimise lubricant leakage.
The permissible operating temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their strength and dimensional stability within this temperature range. When designing the bearing assembly, the selected lubricant must also be approved for the intended operating temperature.
The component is fitted with a sheet steel cage. This cage maintains a uniform spacing between the single-row arrangement of steel rolling elements, is lightweight and allows sufficient space for the lubricant to circulate within the raceways.
The bearing complies with tolerance class P0 or PN, which is equivalent to the international standard ABEC 1. This standard tolerance meets the usual requirements for concentricity and dimensional accuracy in general mechanical engineering, gearbox manufacturing and plant engineering for standard fit designs.
