The SKF 624 -2Z/C3 deep groove ball bearing features compact dimensions of 4 × 13 × 5 mm, with gap seals on both sides and increased bearing clearance for high speeds.
The SKF 624 -2Z/C3 deep groove ball bearing is a compact miniature rolling bearing designed for applications with limited installation space. It primarily accommodates radial forces as well as light axial loads. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6), the design combines a 4 mm bore with an 13 mm outer diameter and a 5 mm width. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly, contributing to smooth running. Maintenance engineers and designers frequently use this design in small electric motors or measuring instruments.
This single-row radial ball bearing is particularly suitable for compact assemblies such as small drives, precision mechanical devices, fans and electromechanical actuators. It withstands radial loads at higher speeds, whilst the cover plates on both sides make it difficult for coarse dust and dirt particles to penetrate the interior of the bearing.
Thanks to its manufacture to tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) without a flange or groove on the outer ring, the component can be fitted flush into cylindrical housing bores. The permissible temperature range extends from -20 to +120 degrees Celsius, making the bearing well-suited to industrial environments.
The combination of 2Z cover plates and a slightly increased radial clearance (C3) ensures minimal friction whilst providing thermal reserve. The non-contacting gap seals made of sheet steel protect against coarse particles without increasing the friction torque, whilst the increased operating clearance compensates for temperature-induced expansion of the shaft and inner ring during operation.
Before installation, check the fits of your shaft and housing bore, as tight press fits reduce the available bearing clearance. For environments with direct contact with splashing water, an ablative seal may be recommended, as the 2Z gap seal primarily seals against solid foreign particles.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 4 mm, an outside diameter of 13 mm and a width of 5 mm. With these compact dimensions, size 624 is classified as a miniature deep-groove ball bearing. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a ring groove, which allows for easy installation in smooth housing bores.
The designation 2Z refers to cover plates made of profiled sheet steel fitted on both sides. These plates form a non-contact sealing gap with the inner ring. This keeps the torque low whilst protecting the interior of the bearing from the ingress of dust and larger particles of dirt. This design is primarily suitable for clean to moderately dusty operating environments.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This additional clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways prevents the bearing from seizing if the shaft and rings heat up unevenly at operating temperature. Furthermore, the C3 bearing clearance compensates for the reduction in bearing clearance caused by tight fits during press-fitting.
The SKF 624-2Z/C3 deep groove ball bearing is specified for an operating temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. This range is supported by the standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6, the sheet steel cage and the sealing washers. For applications involving extreme cold or heat, the compatibility of the lubricant with the operating temperatures should be checked in advance.
Single-row deep-groove ball bearings primarily absorb radial forces; however, due to their design, they are also suitable for withstanding moderate axial loads in both directions. The deep grooves in the inner and outer rings ensure that the balls roll smoothly. For purely or predominantly axial loads in large-scale installations, however, specialised axial roller bearings should be used.
This roller bearing is manufactured to tolerance class P0 (or Normal (PN)), which corresponds to the ABEC 1 classification. This tolerance class meets the standard requirements for dimensional accuracy, roundness and axial run-out in general mechanical engineering. Whilst there are tighter tolerance classes available for high-precision spindle bearings, P0 offers the right balance between running accuracy and cost-effectiveness for standard drives.
