The 6406-C3 deep-groove ball bearing from FAG Wälzlager, with dimensions of 30x90x23 mm and increased bearing clearance, offers reliable running characteristics under thermal loads.
The single-row deep-groove ball bearing 6406 -C3 is designed primarily to accommodate radial loads as well as moderate axial forces. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6) with raceways to standard tolerance P0/PN or ABEC 1, this design is characterised by a cross-section with high load-carrying capacity. The open design, without integrated sealing washers, allows for direct lubrication via the surrounding machine system. It is a versatile standard component for enclosed gearbox and machine housings.
Typical applications include industrial gearboxes and general machinery designs where the shaft and housing already provide effective external sealing against dirt and moisture. Thanks to the open design, lubricating oil or grease reaches the rolling elements and raceways unhindered. The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements during continuous operation. At operating temperatures between –30 and +120 degrees Celsius, the 100Cr6 material retains its mechanical strength and dimensional stability.
The suffix C3 indicates an increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This additional clearance between the rolling elements and raceways helps to prevent seizing should temperature differences arise between the inner ring and outer ring during operation. Tight fits on the shaft cause the inner ring to expand further, which reduces the operating clearance during operation. It is therefore advisable to check, prior to assembly, whether the thermal operating conditions and fit specifications require this increased bearing clearance.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 30 mm, an outside diameter of 90 mm and a width of 23 mm. Thanks to this cross-section, the component can withstand higher radial forces than deep-groove ball bearings with the same bore diameter but a smaller outside diameter. The bearing is designed as a single-row rolling bearing without a flange or groove on the outer ring.
The designation C3 indicates a radial bearing clearance that is slightly greater than normal when the bearing is in its unmounted state. This enables the bearing to compensate for greater thermal expansion of the shaft or housing during operation. Furthermore, the required operating clearance is maintained even if tight fits on the shaft or housing cause the inner ring to expand.
Open roller bearings have neither cover plates nor sealing rings. This design is intended for bearing assemblies that operate in an oil bath or are lubricated via an external lubrication system. Furthermore, there is no frictional resistance caused by rubbing sealing lips, which helps to reduce heat build-up during operation.
The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees Celsius. The standard rolling-bearing steel 100Cr6 and the sheet steel cage retain their functional properties within this temperature range, provided that the lubricant used is suitable for the respective operating temperatures.
This component is manufactured to tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to the ABEC 1 classification in the US. This is the standard for general industrial applications, reliably meeting the usual requirements for dimensional accuracy and concentricity.
