The 6308-2Z deep-groove ball bearing, measuring 40x90x23 mm, features sheet metal shields on both sides to protect against dirt particles at high speeds.
The 6308-2Z deep groove ball bearing from SKF is a single-row bearing designed primarily for radial loads and moderate axial forces in both directions. With a bore of 40 mm, an outer diameter of 90 mm and a width of 23 mm, it complies with standard dimensions. Manufactured in the SKF Explorer performance class from 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, this bearing is characterised by smooth running and dimensional accuracy to tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1).
This deep-groove ball bearing is suitable for applications where smooth running at constant speeds is required. The bearing absorbs radial forces and guides shafts axially within standard tolerances. Thanks to its standard radial clearance, it is suitable for operating temperatures between –20 and +120 degrees without excessive thermal expansion. Designs involving higher temperature differentials or heavy impact loads, however, require special designs.
The designation -2Z stands for two non-contacting cover plates made of pressed sheet steel, which are fixed to both sides of the outer ring. This gap cover keeps larger foreign particles and coarse dust out of the bearing interior without causing additional friction or heat build-up on the shaft. This allows high rotational speeds to be maintained. For damp environments or direct contact with water spray, however, sliding seals are recommended, as gap seals do not form a complete liquid barrier.
With an internal diameter of 40 mm, an external diameter of 90 mm and a width of 23 mm, the bearing complies with standard dimensions. The outer ring is designed without a flange or groove. These dimensions allow for direct replacement in existing assemblies of the same nominal size.
The suffix denotes cover discs made of sheet steel fitted on both sides. These discs act as a non-contact gap cover to prevent the ingress of coarse particles. As the cover discs do not rub against the inner ring, no additional frictional torque is generated compared with elastic seals, which facilitates high rotational speeds.
The permissible operating range is between -20 and +120 degrees Celsius. The components made from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and the sheet steel cage are thermally rated for this range. For applications with operating temperatures exceeding 120 degrees, special high-temperature versions with an adjusted bearing clearance are required.
This model is designed with standard radial bearing clearance. Bearing clearance refers to the radial play between the rolling elements and the raceways when the bearing is unmounted. Standard bearing clearance is suitable for standard applications with typical fits, where there are no extreme temperature differences between the inner and outer rings.
SKF’s Explorer design features optimised internal geometry and a refined surface finish on the raceways and rolling elements. In combination with roller bearing steel, this design reduces stress peaks during operation. This contributes to smooth running, reduced wear and a long service life for the bearing assembly.
A sheet steel cage maintains the rolling elements at a uniform distance. Sheet steel cages offer good strength whilst being lightweight, and are designed to withstand standard lubricants and vibration loads. They are the standard design for industrial applications within the specified temperature range.
