The SKF 6238 M deep groove ball bearing, with a 190 mm bore and a brass cage, offers a robust solution for large industrial bearings.
This single-row deep groove ball bearing, model 6238 M, primarily supports radial loads and guides the shaft axially in both directions. With dimensions of 190 × 340 × 55 mm, this model is classified as a large bearing for use in mechanical and plant engineering. The design is from SKF and is made from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6). As an open design without integrated sealing washers, this rolling bearing allows direct access to lubricant via the housing.
This bearing unit is primarily used in large industrial drives and heavy machinery mountings designed to withstand high radial forces. Thanks to its design, which has no flange or groove on the outer ring, the bearing can be fitted directly into cylindrical housing bores. The permissible temperature range extends from –20 to +150 degrees Celsius. This makes the bearing suitable for thermally demanding industrial environments, provided that the external lubrication system is adapted to the operating temperatures.
The suffix ‘M’ denotes a solid brass cage. Brass is characterised by high resistance to vibrations, shocks and accelerations. In combination with the standard radial bearing clearance and tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1), the deep-groove ball bearing is suitable for drives with consistent operating temperatures. A suitable external housing seal prevents the ingress of dirt particles.
The bearing has a bore of 190 mm, an outer diameter of 340 mm and a width of 55 mm. The outer ring has neither a ring groove nor a flange, which makes it easier to fit into cylindrical housings.
At SKF, the suffix ‘M’ indicates a brass cage. This cage guides the rolling elements stably and withstands additional dynamic forces and vibrations. Brass cages are particularly suitable for operating conditions involving shock loads or high speeds.
This model is manufactured with standard radial bearing clearance. This bearing clearance is suitable for applications with standard fits on the shaft and housing, as well as small temperature differences between the inner and outer rings. Where thermal expansion is greater, versions with increased bearing clearance are selected.
An open bearing has no integrated cover or sealing washers. To prevent the ingress of dirt or moisture and to avoid lubricant loss, the seal must be provided by means of a housing cover fitted with shaft seals or labyrinth seals.
The permissible temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The rings and rolling elements made of 100Cr6, as well as the brass cage, are designed for this range. When designing the bearing, care must be taken to ensure that the lubricant is also suitable for the respective operating temperature.
The bearing is manufactured to tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to tolerance class ABEC 1. This dimensional and running accuracy is sufficient for the vast majority of applications in general mechanical engineering and gearbox construction.
