The SKF 6205/C3 deep groove ball bearing is an open rolling bearing with a 25 mm bore and increased C3 clearance, designed for industrial applications subject to thermal stress.
The SKF 6205/C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing in the Explorer performance class. With key dimensions of a 25 mm bore, 52 mm outer diameter and 15 mm width, this rolling bearing primarily withstands radial forces, but also handles axial loads in both directions. The component is made of case-hardened roller bearing steel (100Cr6) and houses the rolling elements in a sturdy sheet steel cage. As it is an open bearing without integrated sealing washers, lubricant reaches the raceways unimpeded.
This design is primarily used on rotating shafts where elevated operating temperatures occur. The open design requires a lubricated environment with external housing seals. With a permissible temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees, this design is suitable for industrial applications involving continuous heat generation. The bearing accommodates both radial and axial loads and allows for high operating speeds without the need for abiding seals.
The /C3 designation indicates increased radial bearing clearance. This additional clearance between the balls and raceways helps to compensate for seizing if the inner and outer rings heat up unevenly during operation or if tight press fits reduce the radial clearance. SKF also manufactures this model to a higher precision: dimensional accuracy complies with tolerance class P6, whilst running accuracy to P5 specifies tighter concentricity tolerances. Before assembly, the shaft and housing seats should be matched to these accuracy requirements.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 25 mm, an outside diameter of 52 mm and a width of 15 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has no flange or ring groove. With these dimensions, the roller bearing fits into standardised housing bores and onto corresponding shafts with a diameter of 25 mm.
C3 denotes a radial bearing clearance greater than that of the standard version. It compensates for thermal expansion caused by temperature differences between the shaft and the housing, as well as for the reduction in bearing clearance resulting from tight fits. This is intended to ensure that the balls continue to rotate freely even under the influence of heat.
This design combines dimensional accuracy to Class P6 with finer running accuracy to Class P5. For the bearing arrangement, this means lower runout errors, reduced vibrations and smooth, even running. Particularly in demanding shaft bearing arrangements, the improved runout accuracy results in consistent operational behaviour.
As this is an open design without integrated cover plates or sealing washers, the bearing requires lubrication via the surrounding housing, for example through an oil bath or by means of a targeted grease fill. An external housing seal, such as a radial shaft seal, protects the interior from ingress of particles and serves to prevent lubricant loss.
The permissible operating temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The design, made from hardened 100Cr6 roller bearing steel, and the temperature-resistant sheet steel cage are capable of withstanding these conditions. When designing the bearing arrangement, it is primarily the chosen lubricant that determines the actual thermal operating range of the entire system.
Both the raceways and the rolling elements are made from through-hardened 100Cr6 roller bearing steel. This material is characterised by high strength and wear resistance. The rolling elements are guided by a dimensionally stable cage made of pressed sheet steel, which ensures mechanical stability at varying speeds.
