The SKF 6204-2Z deep groove ball bearing, measuring 20 × 47 × 14 mm, features non-contact sheet metal shields on both sides and is designed for rotary applications requiring high running accuracy.
The SKF 6204-2Z deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) with a bore of 20 mm, an outer diameter of 47 mm and a width of 14 mm. As part of the SKF Explorer range, this bearing is characterised by a combination of dimensional accuracy to tolerance class P6 and running accuracy to P5. Design engineers and maintenance personnel primarily use this type of bearing in drives and shaft mountings where radial forces predominate and axial guidance loads occur.
The bearing is primarily used in applications that require low-friction operation at higher speeds. The design primarily accommodates radial loads, but thanks to the deep raceways, it also supports moderate axial forces in both directions. The sheet steel cage ensures that the spacing between the rolling elements remains evenly maintained during alternating rotational movements.
The end plates on both sides (designation -2Z) are made of profiled sheet steel. They act as a non-contact gap seal, which means that, unlike with sliding seals, no additional frictional torque is generated. This design protects the bearing interior from coarse particles and dust. The tighter tolerance class – P6 for dimensions and P5 for concentricity – reduces vibrations and ensures low-vibration operation. The bearing is suitable for use in temperatures ranging from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius.
This deep-groove ball bearing has an inner diameter of 20 mm, an outer diameter of 47 mm and a width across flats of 14 mm. The outer ring has no flange or groove. Before fitting, check that the shaft and housing seats correspond to these precise mounting dimensions.
The designation -2Z refers to two non-contacting cover discs made of sheet steel, which are secured to the outer ring on both sides. They form a narrow gap relative to the inner ring shoulder. This prevents any friction-induced drop in speed, whilst at the same time preventing foreign particles, such as grains of dirt, from entering the raceway.
The bearing is manufactured with standard radial clearance. The radial clearance describes the distance by which the rings can be moved relative to one another in the radial direction when the bearing is unloaded. This standard value is suitable for industrial applications with normal operating temperatures and without excessive thermal expansion of the shaft.
This specification denotes a higher level of manufacturing precision than the standard. Dimensional accuracy to Class P6 means tighter tolerance bands for bore and outside diameters. Running accuracy to P5 reduces radial and axial runout to a minimum, resulting in smooth running and reduced vibrations during operation.
For the 6204-2Z deep-groove ball bearing, the permissible temperature range is between -20 and +120 degrees Celsius. The 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel, the sheet steel cage and the metal end plates are designed to remain dimensionally stable within these temperature limits. Ensure that the lubricant used is suitable for operation within this range.
In this design, a sheet steel cage maintains a uniform spacing between the rolling elements. Sheet steel cages combine a low weight with sufficient strength to withstand impact loads. They are suitable for the entire specified temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius.
