The SKF 608/C3 deep groove ball bearing, with dimensions of 8x22x7 mm, offers compact installation dimensions, increased radial clearance and precise running characteristics for demanding shaft mountings.
The SKF 608/C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row miniature roller bearing made from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel. With a bore of 8 mm, an outside diameter of 22 mm and a width of 7 mm, this open bearing primarily accommodates radial loads. As it does not feature integrated sealing washers, the unit starts up with low friction. A guided sheet steel cage maintains an even spacing between the rolling elements and supports continuous operation in clean lubrication environments.
This radial ball bearing is designed to support small rotating shafts in confined spaces. As the component is of open design, it is suitable for enclosed housing constructions in which lubricating oil or grease is supplied from the outside. The design covers a temperature range from -20 to +150 degrees. The absence of abrasive seals makes it ideal for applications where low rotational resistance and high speeds are required.
The abbreviation C3 denotes a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This additional operating clearance compensates for thermal expansion when the bearing heats up or for tight fits on the shaft, without the bearing becoming stressed. In addition to the increased bearing clearance, this variant is characterised by enhanced manufacturing precision: dimensional accuracy complies with tolerance class P6, whilst running accuracy is manufactured to P5. These tight running tolerances reduce vibrations and promote smooth concentricity during operation.
This ball bearing has an inside diameter of 8 mm, an outside diameter of 22 mm and a width of 7 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical, with no groove or flange. Thanks to these compact standard dimensions, this single-row roller bearing fits into standardised housing bores of the 608 series.
The designation C3 indicates an increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This gives the balls more room to move within the raceways. As a result, this design helps to prevent the rolling elements from becoming jammed when the shaft and inner ring heat up during operation or when tight fits reduce the bearing clearance.
The open design, which has no sealing or cover plates, minimises the friction torque during start-up and whilst rotating. It also allows for free circulation of lubricants in enclosed assemblies such as oil-bath gearboxes. However, to protect against contamination, this variant requires an external housing seal.
This classification combines dimensional accuracy to Class P6 with finer running accuracy to Class P5. Compared with the standard tolerance, the bearing has tighter concentricity tolerances. This characteristic promotes smooth running and reduces the tendency for vibration in precision rotating applications.
The component is designed for ambient temperatures between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The rings and balls, made from 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel, and the temperature-resistant sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability within this range. A lubricant suitable for the operating temperature must be selected for each application.
