The SKF 6004/C3 deep groove ball bearing, with a 20 mm bore, C3 clearance and an open design, offers a wide range of applications at higher speeds.
The 6004/C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing in SKF’s Explorer series. With compact main dimensions of 20 mm inside diameter, 42 mm outside diameter and 12 mm width, it primarily accommodates radial forces as well as moderate axial loads. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel and fitted with a robust sheet steel cage, this design is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. The component is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from –20 to +150 degrees.
This roller bearing is primarily used in rotating systems where low-friction operation and thermal reserves are required. Typical applications include bearings subject to continuous rotational movement and shaft systems with an external lubricant supply. As this is an open bearing without integrated sealing washers, the installation location requires a housing seal to prevent the ingress of contaminants. At the same time, this open design allows for a direct supply of lubricant – oil or grease – from the surrounding system.
The suffixes denote functional characteristics for demanding installation situations. The designation C3 stands for a slightly increased radial bearing clearance. This increased clearance between the rolling elements and raceways compensates for thermal expansion at operating temperature or fit constrictions caused by rigid shaft seats. Furthermore, the bearing is characterised by enhanced precision: dimensional accuracy corresponds to class P6, whilst running accuracy complies with class P5. As a result, the shaft runs more smoothly with reduced runout deviation.
With a bore diameter of 20 mm, an outer diameter of 42 mm and a width of 12 mm, the roller bearing complies with standardised dimensions. The cylindrical outer ring has a smooth finish, i.e. it is manufactured without a flange or ring groove. Before installation, it is advisable to check the dimensions of the shaft and housing bore to ensure a precise fit.
The designation C3 indicates that the radial bearing clearance is greater than the standard range. This increased clearance is beneficial where constrictions occur due to tight fits on the inner or outer ring. Similarly, the C3 clearance helps to prevent the rolling elements from becoming jammed should a temperature gradient develop between the shaft and the housing during operation.
Both the raceways and the rolling elements of this bearing are made from through-hardened standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). This material is characterised by its dimensional stability under load. A sheet steel cage is used to guide the balls.
Open bearings are supplied ex-works without either cover plates or sealing washers. This design minimises torque by eliminating friction caused by the seal. It is suitable for installation locations that are already protected from dust by a housing seal, or where the bearing operates directly within the lubrication circuit of an assembly.
This version combines two higher precision grades. The dimensional accuracy complies with tolerance class P6, which means tighter tolerances for bore and outside diameters. The running accuracy corresponds to the finer P5 class, thereby minimising run-out and axial run-out errors. This contributes to low-vibration running characteristics.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees. Within this range, the 100Cr6 steel retains its dimensional stability. When designing the system, it is important to bear in mind that the chosen lubricant – whether lubricating oil or bearing grease – should also be suitable for the prevailing temperature.
