The SKF 6003 deep-groove ball bearing, measuring 17x35x10 mm, offers compact dimensions, an open design and enhanced running accuracy for demanding industrial applications.
The SKF 6003 single-row deep groove ball bearing is one of the tried-and-tested rolling bearings for rotating shafts. As an open design without integrated sealing washers, this bearing allows for the direct supply of lubricating oil or grease via the surrounding system. SKF’s Explorer design is based on an optimised internal geometry made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6). Together with a sheet steel cage, the bearing accommodates predominantly radial loads as well as moderate axial loads in both directions.
The open deep-groove ball bearing 6003 is primarily fitted in enclosed assemblies where housing seals prevent the ingress of dirt or moisture. Typical applications include oil- or grease-lubricated bearing locations in rotating machine components. By eliminating sliding seals, the bearing reduces friction losses, which has a positive effect on heat generation and limiting speeds. The permissible temperature range is from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius.
In the 6003 model, SKF combines dimensional accuracy to P6 with running accuracy to P5. These tighter tolerances compared with the standard specification reduce runout errors and promote smooth shaft rotation. When designing the bearing seats, it is advisable to manufacture the mating surfaces to a correspondingly high degree of precision in order to make full use of the clearance. With the standard radial bearing clearance, the rolling bearing is suitable for standard fits without any exceptional temperature differences between the inner and outer rings.
With an internal diameter of 17 mm, an external diameter of 35 mm and a width of 10 mm, the bearing has standardised dimensions. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a ring groove. These dimensions enable a precise fit in standardised bearing seats.
Manufactured without integrated sealing or cover washers, this design minimises the friction torque and is ideally suited to oil bath or circulating lubrication systems. Its use requires that the surrounding machine housing provides the lubricant supply and protects the bearing location from foreign matter and moisture.
Normal radial bearing clearance refers to the factory-set radial clearance between the rolling elements and raceways when the bearing is in its unassembled state. This clearance is designed for conventional fits. In the event of operational heating, sufficient clearance is maintained to prevent the rolling elements from seizing up and to ensure an even distribution of forces.
These grades define tighter manufacturing limits than the standard tolerance. The P6 dimensional accuracy limits deviations in bore, outer diameter and width. The P5 running accuracy reduces radial and axial runout errors. Together, this results in precise shaft guidance and reduced vibrations under demanding operating conditions.
The 6003 deep-groove ball bearing is designed for a temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. Within these limits, both the roller bearing steel (100Cr6) and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability. When determining the actual operating temperature, the temperature resistance of the lubricant used must always be taken into account.
During operation, the sheet steel cage separates the balls in the ball row from one another and guides them at regular intervals. The sheet steel design is characterised by its dimensional stability and compatibility with standard industrial greases and oils. The cage is suitable for the entire specified temperature range.
