The SKF 6018 deep groove ball bearing, measuring 90x140x24 mm, features an open design for radial load transmission in mechanical engineering.
The 6018 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row radial ball bearing in an open design, made from 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel. As a bearing in the SKF Explorer performance class, it combines a standard radial bearing clearance with increased dimensional accuracy to tolerance class P6 and running accuracy to PN. Due to its open design, this rolling bearing is particularly suitable for applications where the lubricant can circulate freely or where a surrounding housing provides the external seal.
The design is primarily intended to accommodate high radial loads during operation. The deep raceways in the inner and outer rings also accommodate moderate axial forces in both directions. Typical areas of application include industrial applications with a rotating shaft and external housing sealing. A sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly at constant speeds. The rolling bearing is thermally rated for operating environments ranging from –20 to +120 degrees.
In this design, tolerance class P6 implies tighter dimensional accuracy for the bore and outer diameter compared to the basic standard. This ensures a precise bearing fit on the 90 mm shaft and within the housing. As the bearing is supplied by the manufacturer without seals, the lubricant can be freely selected to suit the operating conditions. During assembly, care must be taken to ensure that no foreign particles enter the interior and that external seals protect the bearing environment.
With a bore of 90 mm, an outer diameter of 140 mm and a width of 24 mm, the bearing features cylindrical rings. Both the inner ring and the outer ring are precisely matched to one another. The outer ring is supplied by the manufacturer without either a groove or a flange.
Tolerance class P6 denotes a narrower tolerance range for the main dimensions than that of the standard PN class. Bore and outside diameters exhibit smaller deviations, which helps to ensure a more precise fit on the shaft. The running accuracy of this model corresponds to the standard PN class.
Open roller bearings do not have integrated cover plates or sealing discs. This design is recommended for applications with oil bath or recirculating lubrication, as the lubricant can reach the rolling elements unimpeded. In this case, the machine housing must provide the seal against dirt and moisture.
SKF Explorer bearings are based on optimised manufacturing processes and refined raceway surfaces. This design promotes even stress distribution in the contact area between the rolling elements and the grooves, which contributes to a high level of operational reliability in industrial applications.
The permissible operating range is from -20 to +120 degrees. Within this range, the 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability. When selecting the lubricant, care must be taken to ensure that it is suitable for the relevant operating temperatures.
Normal radial bearing clearance refers to the radial clearance between the balls and the raceways, as specified by the manufacturer, when the bearing is unloaded. It is dimensioned in such a way that, after the rings have been pressed onto the shaft and housing, and subject to normal heating, the required concentricity is maintained.
