The SKF 61830 MA deep-groove ball bearing, with a 150 mm bore and a narrow 20 mm cross-section, offers a space-saving solution for precise shaft guidance.
The single-row deep-groove ball bearing 61830 MA belongs to the particularly space-saving thin-section series and is designed primarily to withstand radial loads. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) with standard radial clearance and to tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1), this open rolling bearing is suitable for demanding designs where, despite large shaft diameters, only limited radial installation space is available.
Design engineers and maintenance technicians turn to this design when large-diameter rotating components need to be supported cleanly. Typical applications include compact designs and assemblies with limited radial installation space. Thanks to the favourable ratio between the inner diameter of 150 mm and the outer diameter of 190 mm, the total weight of the assembly remains low, whilst the raceway geometry is capable of accommodating moderate axial forces in both directions.
The suffix ‘MA’ denotes a solid brass cage that is guided on the outer ring. This external guidance stabilises the rolling element guidance even during dynamic rotational movements or vibrations, as the cage slides on the shoulder of the outer ring without mechanical stress. As this is an unsealed bearing, you should incorporate an external housing seal and select grease or lubricating oil suitable for the permissible temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees.
This roller bearing has an inside diameter of 150 mm, an outside diameter of 190 mm and a width of 20 mm. The cylindrical outer ring is designed without a flange or ring groove. With these dimensions, the component is classified as a thin-section bearing, which requires minimal radial installation space even with large shaft diameters.
The designation ‘MA’ refers to a solid brass cage which, in terms of guidance, rests against the outer ring. This so-called ‘outboard guidance’ provides the cage with additional guidance force under varying loads or speeds and ensures precise guidance of the rolling elements during operation.
The bearing does not have any integrated cover plates or sealing washers. This open design allows lubricating oil to flow directly through the housing or enables the use of customer-specific greases within the housing. To prevent the ingress of dirt particles and moisture, on-site sealing via the housing design is required.
According to the technical specifications, the bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees. The components made from 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel and the brass cage remain dimensionally stable within this range. When specifying the lubrication, care must be taken to ensure that the selected lubricant is approved for the actual operating range.
Standard bearing clearance provides a balance between radial operating clearance and play-free operation for standard fits. It compensates for the normal thermal expansion of the rings during operation without causing undesirable stress between the balls and the raceways.
The component is manufactured to tolerance class P0 or PN, which corresponds to international standard class ABEC 1. This standard level of precision covers the majority of all common industrial applications; however, it requires a precisely machined shaft and housing fit to ensure consistent concentricity within the system.
