The SKF 6316 deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row radial ball bearing with an 80 mm bore, designed for industrial gearboxes, electric motors and heavy-duty shaft mountings.
As a single-row rolling bearing, the SKF 6316 deep groove ball bearing primarily accommodates radial loads as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. The open design, without integrated sealing washers, allows for flexible lubrication via the surrounding machinery system, for example in closed oil or grease circuits. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6) in the SKF Explorer design and guided by a robust sheet steel cage, this bearing is suitable for demanding operating environments, ranging from machine tools to conveyor systems.
Maintenance engineers and designers prefer to use this rolling bearing in heavy-duty units, stationary drives, large pumps and industrial gearboxes. With a shaft diameter of 80 mm and an outer diameter of 170 mm, the component transmits considerable forces during continuous rotational movement. As the bearing is open at both ends, lubricant can circulate freely within the housing. This allows operating heat to be effectively dissipated during continuous operation, whilst the rolling elements remain lubricated.
To ensure correct installation, the bearing features the standard tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) and a standard radial clearance. This combination is suitable for typical fit selections on solid steel shafts where no extreme thermal expansion occurs. As no seals are integrated, the bearing housing requires external sealing to protect against dirt and moisture. The permissible temperature range extends from –20 to +120 degrees Celsius, which covers the standard requirements of conventional industrial installations.
The dimensions are 80 mm internal diameter for the shaft, 170 mm external diameter and 39 mm width. These dimensions are designed for heavy-duty shaft bearings with high load-carrying capacities. Before installation, it is advisable to check the fit with the bearing seats in the housing to ensure dimensional accuracy and a correct fit.
Open roller bearings do not have integrated cover plates or sealing discs, thereby eliminating friction losses caused by sealing lips coming into contact. This design is used when external housing seals provide the seal or when a continuous oil circulation system lubricates the component. Furthermore, the open design simplifies relubrication and allows for visual inspection of the sheet steel cage and raceways during maintenance work.
P0 corresponds to ABEC 1 and describes the standardised normal tolerance for rolling bearings. It defines the permissible dimensional and concentricity tolerances for the inner ring, outer ring and bearing width. This standard class is entirely sufficient for the vast majority of industrial applications in general mechanical engineering and enables cost-effective pairing with standardised shaft and housing fits.
The specified operating range is between -20 and +120 degrees Celsius. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the robust sheet steel cage are designed for this temperature range. When selecting the external lubricant, you should ensure that its viscosity and thermal stability are also approved for the selected operating range within the unit.
SKF Explorer features an enhanced design in terms of material quality, surface finish of the raceways and internal geometry. Modified rolling-bearing steel and smoothed contact surfaces reduce friction during operation. This contributes to increased wear resistance and high load-carrying capacity under demanding industrial operating conditions, without the need to alter the external dimensions.
The deep raceways in the inner and outer rings primarily absorb high radial forces perpendicular to the shaft. At the same time, they support axial forces in both directions. This combination makes this type of bearing a versatile machine component, provided there are no extreme misalignments between the shaft and the housing bore that could lead to unacceptable skewing of the raceways.
