The FAG 6304-N deep-groove ball bearing, with a 20 mm bore and a ring groove in the outer ring, offers a solution for simple axial fixation.
The 6304-N deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing from FAG made from standard bearing steel 100Cr6. With main dimensions of 20 mm inner diameter, 52 mm outer diameter and 15 mm width, the component primarily absorbs radial forces as well as moderate axial forces. The open bearing design promotes smooth running, as there are no sealing lips to create additional frictional resistance. A sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly along the raceway.
This rolling bearing is primarily used in designs where axial installation space is limited. The integrated ring groove in the outer ring serves to secure the bearing axially within the housing using a snap ring. This eliminates the need for additional housing shoulders or cover designs. Thanks to its open design, the bearing can be lubricated via a surrounding oil bath or application-specific grease lubrication.
The ring groove on the outer circumference simplifies housing design, as a positive-lock fastening using retaining rings is sufficient. The bearing has standard radial clearance and a tolerance class of P0/PN (corresponding to ABEC 1), making it suitable for standard fits. The component operates within its specified range at operating temperatures from -30 to +120 degrees. As there are no integrated seals, external sealing of the housing to prevent the ingress of contaminants must be provided.
The groove in the outer ring accommodates a matching retaining ring to secure the bearing axially within the housing. This solution saves axial installation space, as conventional stop shoulders in the housing are no longer required. It simplifies the housing bore and thus facilitates assembly in compact machine designs.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 20 mm, an external diameter of 52 mm and a width of 15 mm. The component is made from case-hardened standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 and houses the rolling elements in a single row of balls.
Normal radial bearing clearance refers to the standard internal clearance between the balls and the raceways when the bearing is unloaded. This design is intended for standard fits and standard operating temperatures. Once pressed in, it ensures smooth running without causing excessive stress on the components.
The permissible temperature range is from -30 to +120 degrees. Within this range, the roller bearing steel and the guided sheet steel cage retain their dimensional stability. When designing the lubrication system, care must be taken to ensure that the selected lubricant is suitable for the system’s operating temperatures.
Open bearings have neither cover plates nor sliding seals. This means there is no additional frictional resistance, which allows for higher limiting speeds and lower torque. This design requires the lubricant to be supplied via the machine housing and external sealing elements to protect the bearing from contamination.
A sheet steel cage is used inside. This keeps the rolling elements at a uniform distance apart and prevents them from coming into contact with one another. Sheet steel cages are characterised by their low weight and can easily withstand common mineral and synthetic lubricants.
