The FAG 6217-C4 deep-groove ball bearing, with an 85 mm bore and increased C4 clearance, offers operational reliability under severe thermal conditions.
The 6217-C4 deep-groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel, designed primarily for radial loads. With dimensions of 85 × 150 × 28 mm, this open bearing also accommodates axial forces in both directions. Manufactured to the standard tolerance P0/PN (ABEC 1), it is suitable for industrial machinery where thermal expansion or tight fits occur. As it does not feature integrated sealing washers, the bearing can be integrated directly into existing lubrication circuits.
This design is suitable for industrial drives subject to thermal stress and rotating assemblies with significant operational heating. Thanks to the combination of an open outer ring without a flange and a sheet steel cage, the bearing operates in oil- or grease-lubricated housings. The permissible temperature range is from -30 to +150 degrees. Its use is particularly recommended where there are thermal differences between the shaft and the housing, as well as in the case of tight fits.
The designation C4 indicates a significantly increased radial clearance, which is well above the standard and exceeds the C3 grade. This increased clearance compensates for the radial expansion of the shaft at high operating temperatures, as well as for the constriction caused by tight fits. You should specifically select the C4 variant if temperature gradients occur between the inner and outer rings during normal operation. However, at low operating temperatures or with small fit allowances, the increased bearing clearance may result in noticeable play.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 85 mm, an outside diameter of 150 mm and a width of 28 mm. These standardised key dimensions enable a precise fit when mounted on suitable shafts and in housing bores without a flange or groove on the outer ring.
The designation C4 indicates a significantly increased radial clearance when the bearing is unmounted. This additional clearance between the rolling elements and raceways reduces the risk of the bearing becoming stressed when the shaft heats up or due to tight fits, and helps to minimise friction and premature wear.
Open roller bearings have neither cover plates nor sealing plates. They are suitable for environments in which the lubricant – such as lubricating oil or grease – can circulate freely, or where the housing provides an external seal. They also make it easier to flush out and relubricate the bearings during maintenance work.
The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. Rings and rolling elements made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), as well as the integrated sheet steel cage, retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range, provided that the lubricant is suitable for the respective operating temperature.
The roller bearing complies with tolerance class P0 or PN in accordance with standardisation specifications, which corresponds to ABEC 1. This standard tolerance meets the usual precision requirements in general mechanical and plant engineering for smooth concentricity and standardised bearing seats.
The bearing features a sheet steel cage which keeps the single-row rolling elements at a uniform distance apart. Sheet steel cages offer high strength combined with low weight and can withstand the operating temperatures specified for the bearing, up to +150 degrees.
