The FAG 16038 -C3 deep-groove ball bearing is an open rolling bearing with a 190 mm bore, designed for radial loads and industrial applications subject to thermal stress.
The 16038 -C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row roller bearing from FAG, designed for industrial applications involving high radial loads. With dimensions of 190 mm inner diameter, 290 mm outer diameter and a width of 31 mm, this component is suitable for large-scale shaft mountings. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, the component primarily absorbs radial forces as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. The design without an integrated seal allows for straightforward lubrication directly via the housing system.
This rolling bearing is primarily used on mounted shafts with a diameter of 190 mm that are operated under continuous load. Thanks to the integrated sheet steel cage and the wide temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees, the bearing is designed for environments where heat is generated during operation. As it is an open bearing without a flange or groove on the outer ring, it can be flexibly fitted into cylindrical housing bores and lubricated externally with oil or grease.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This increased clearance between the inner ring, outer ring and the rolling elements helps to prevent seizing if the shaft or bearing rings heat up and expand during operation. The C3 version is specifically recommended for tight fits on the shaft or where there are temperature differences between the inner and outer rings. For standard applications without thermal expansion, the standard tolerance is usually sufficient, whilst C3 offers additional operational reliability under thermal stress.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 190 mm, an outside diameter of 290 mm and a width of 31 mm. It has a slim design with no ring groove or flange on the outer ring. These specified key dimensions enable a precise fit when installed on suitable industrial shafts and in standardised housing fits.
As an open bearing, this design is deliberately constructed without cover plates or sealing discs. This allows the rolling bearing to be flexibly supplied with grease or circulating oil via an external lubrication system. Furthermore, there are no friction losses caused by rubbing sealing lips, which makes it suitable for use at higher speeds. An external housing seal is designed to keep out dirt particles.
The permissible operating temperature range is between -20 and +150 degrees Celsius. The dimensional stability of the rings and rolling elements made from 100Cr6 bearing steel is maintained within this range. In conjunction with the integrated sheet steel cage, the bearing is therefore suitable for both cold environments and industrial applications involving high levels of process or frictional heat.
P0, or ABEC 1, refers to the standard tolerance for rolling bearings in accordance with international standards. It defines binding limit values for roundness, axial run-out and dimensional accuracy of the inner and outer rings. This accuracy class covers most industrial requirements in mechanical engineering and ensures the economical and reliable operation of the bearing assembly under normal operating conditions.
The inner and outer rings, as well as the rolling elements, are made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), which is characterised by high hardness and wear resistance. A sheet steel cage is used to guide the balls. This combination offers high load-carrying capacity under dynamic forces and ensures even load distribution across the raceways.
Bearing clearance class C3 is recommended where the inner ring is expanded or the outer ring is compressed due to tight fits. Similarly, the increased clearance compensates for thermal expansion should a temperature gradient develop between the shaft and the housing during operation. This prevents stress build-up in the bearing and ensures smooth running under thermal load.
