The SKF 6403 deep groove ball bearing is an open, single-row rolling bearing measuring 17 × 62 × 17 mm, designed for radial and axial loads.
The SKF 6403 deep groove ball bearing is characterised by its large outer diameter in relation to the bore. As a single-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6), this design accommodates both radial and axial forces in both directions. The open design, without integrated sealing washers, allows unobstructed access of lubricant directly to the raceways. The outer ring is designed without a flange or groove, which facilitates cylindrical mounting in precisely fitted housing bores.
Design engineers primarily use this design when a robust bearing arrangement with high load-carrying capacity is required for a shaft diameter of 17 mm. With an outer diameter of 62 mm and a width of 17 mm, the 64 series represents a particularly robust design. Relevant areas of application include general mechanical engineering and industrial drives, where the rolling bearing operates within a sealed housing and is lubricated from the outside.
The design without sealing washers avoids additional friction, as there are no sealing lips in contact with the bearing rings. The bearing is specified for a temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius and features standard radial clearance as well as tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1). A sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly between the inner and outer rings and maintains the correct spacing between them during operation.
The dimensions are 17 mm bore diameter, 62 mm outside diameter and 17 mm width. This means that the bearing corresponds to the metric 64 series for single-row deep-groove ball bearings.
This designation indicates the standard radial clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways as supplied. It is designed for standard fits and operating temperatures at which no significant thermal expansion occurs.
In this open design, the bearing is supplied without grease. Lubrication must be carried out before or during commissioning, in accordance with the specific application, using the lubricating oil or grease specified for the bearing location.
Both the bearing rings and the rolling elements are made from standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel. A cage made from pressed sheet steel guides the balls evenly along the raceways.
The specified temperature range is between –20 and +120 degrees Celsius. The temperature resistance of the lubricant used is also a decisive factor in determining the actual thermal operating limit.
