The FAG 6244 -M-C3 deep groove ball bearing, with a 220 mm bore, brass cage and C3 clearance, offers a high-load-capacity solution for demanding large-scale machinery.
The FAG 6244 -M-C3 deep groove ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing for industrial applications in heavy machinery manufacturing. Measuring 220 x 400 x 65 mm, this open bearing can accommodate high radial forces as well as moderate axial forces in both directions. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6, it features dimensionally accurate raceways to standard tolerance P0. The open design allows the rolling elements to be lubricated directly whilst the bearing is in operation, for example via a centralised oil or grease lubrication system.
This large bearing is primarily used in heavy-duty industrial drives where considerable radial forces act on shafts with a diameter of 220 mm. Thanks to its temperature resistance ranging from -30 to +200 degrees, the component is suitable for thermally demanding operating environments. Design engineers prefer to use the open design in enclosed housings, where a continuous lubricant circulation removes foreign particles and aids the cooling of the components.
The suffix ‘M’ denotes a solid brass cage which guides the rolling elements and offers high mechanical strength even under severe vibrations or impact loads. The designation ‘C3’ indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard clearance. This additional clearance counteracts the tightening of the bearing rings if the shaft and housing heat up unevenly during operation or if tight fits reduce the operating clearance. Before installation, check whether your operating temperature requires this increased bearing clearance.
With a bore of 220 mm, an outside diameter of 400 mm and a width of 65 mm, the roller bearing determines the required installation space on the shaft and in the housing seat. Thanks to its cylindrical outer ring without a flange or ring groove, the bearing fits flush into cylindrical bearing bores with the appropriate tolerances.
The open design, which does not feature integrated sealing washers, allows lubricating oil or grease to circulate directly throughout the entire bearing chamber. Users frequently employ open bearings in housings with external seals, as this allows lubricants to be replenished flexibly during operation or cooled via recirculation systems. Furthermore, there are no friction losses caused by rubbing seal lips.
The designation C3 indicates an increased radial clearance, which is greater than the standard value for normal clearance. Such radial clearance compensates for thermal expansion at high operating temperatures. Even with tight fits on the 220 mm shaft or in the bearing housing, sufficient internal clearance is maintained, which prevents the rolling elements from seizing up during operation.
The brass cage keeps the balls at a uniform distance apart and guides them safely along the raceways of the inner and outer rings. Brass is characterised by good emergency running properties and high resistance to vibration. As a result, the solid cage design is particularly suitable, compared to sheet metal cages, for heavy-duty industrial applications involving varying accelerations and vibrations.
This roller bearing is specified for an operating temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees Celsius. Its heat resistance stems from the choice of standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel, combined with the brass cage and the open design, which does not feature heat-sensitive plastic seals. To ensure reliable operation, the lubricant used must be suitable for the relevant temperature range.
The component is manufactured to tolerance class P0 (also known as standard tolerance PN or ABEC 1). This class defines the exact limit dimensions as well as the roundness and runout tolerances of the rings. It represents the established industry standard for heavy machinery manufacturing and meets the usual accuracy requirements for cylindrical shaft and housing seats.
