The FAG 16044 deep-groove ball bearing is an open, single-row radial bearing measuring 220 × 340 × 37 mm, designed for industrial shaft assemblies.
The 16044 deep groove ball bearing primarily accommodates radial loads and also supports axial forces in both directions. This version of the FAG rolling bearing has a bore of 220 mm, an outside diameter of 340 mm and a narrow width of 37 mm. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) with raceways and balls made from the same material, the component meets the requirements of tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. It has no electrical insulation and is used in cylindrical bearing seats without a flange or groove on the outer ring.
Design engineers primarily use this narrow design where, with large shaft diameters of 220 mm, only limited radial installation space is available. Thanks to its deep groove geometry, the bearing guides the shaft accurately and is suitable for bearing arrangements subject to combined radial and axial forces. As it is an open bearing without integrated grinding or cover discs, it can be integrated directly into lubricant circulation systems. Designs with oil lubrication or a central lubricant supply benefit from the unimpeded flow of lubricant.
When installing the open bearing, care must be taken to ensure a clean installation environment so that no foreign particles enter the raceway system. In this model, protection against dust and moisture is provided by the surrounding housing structure. The bearing has a standard radial clearance, which enables smooth concentricity during operation with standard fits. A sturdy sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly in a straight line. The permissible operating temperature range is from -20 to +150 degrees.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 220 mm, an outer diameter of 340 mm and a width of 37 mm. These dimensions indicate a comparatively narrow design in relation to the shaft diameter, which enables compact housing designs in heavy machinery.
An open bearing is supplied ex works without either cover plates or sealing washers. Lubricants such as oil or grease can reach the balls and the sheet steel cage unhindered. This simplifies relubrication and integration into recirculating lubrication systems, but requires an external housing seal to protect against dirt.
Normal radial bearing clearance refers to the design clearance between the rolling elements and the raceways when the bearing is in its unassembled state. It compensates for the dimensional restriction caused by standard fits on the shaft and housing, ensuring that the bearing runs with low friction and without excessive stress when operating at operating temperature.
The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees. Both the rings and rolling elements made of 100Cr6 steel and the guided sheet steel cage maintain their dimensional accuracy within this range. When selecting the lubricant, you must ensure that its temperature suitability is appropriate for this range.
The sheet steel cage separates the individual rolling elements on the circular raceway, prevents direct contact between the balls and ensures an even load distribution. The lightweight design of the sheet steel cage reduces the mass of the rolling bearing and facilitates the free circulation of lubricant within the bearing housing.
This classification corresponds to the standard tolerance for rolling bearings in accordance with international standards. It defines binding limit values for dimensional, geometric and running accuracy of the bore, the outer diameter and the radial runout. This level of accuracy is entirely sufficient for most industrial drives and machine shafts.
