The FAG 16017 deep-groove ball bearing, measuring 85 × 130 × 14 mm, offers a particularly narrow design for radial loads.
The single-row deep-groove ball bearing 16017 is an open rolling bearing made from standard rolling bearing steel (100Cr6). Thanks to its narrow cross-sectional width of just 14 mm with an 85-mm bore, this design is suitable for compact constructions where axial installation space is limited. It is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0/PN (corresponding to ABEC 1) with standard radial clearance. A robust sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly through the deep raceways of the inner and outer rings.
Design engineers turn to the 16017 deep groove ball bearing when large-diameter shafts need to be supported, but the housing space in the axial direction is limited. This bearing primarily absorbs radial forces, but also supports the shaft under moderate axial forces in both directions. Typical applications are found where rotating components are mounted with limited axial installation space. The open design allows for use in oil-lubricated housings, where the lubricant can circulate unimpeded.
As this bearing has no integrated seals, protection against contamination must be provided by the surrounding machine housing. Dirt particles or moisture must not be allowed to penetrate the raceways. The permissible temperature range is from –20 to +150 degrees Celsius, making the bearing suitable for thermally demanding environments. When designing the system, take care when selecting the lubricant: open roller bearings require a suitable oil or grease lubrication to ensure low-friction operation, which you should check regularly as part of your maintenance schedule.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 85 mm, an outside diameter of 130 mm and a width of 14 mm. These dimensions characterise a particularly narrow design, which is used where axial space is limited.
The normal radial bearing clearance refers to the standard internal clearance between the balls and raceways when the bearing is unassembled. It ensures that, with conventional fits and at standard operating temperatures, the rolling bearing rotates smoothly without seizing up due to oversize or thermal expansion.
Open bearings offer the lowest friction, as there are no sealing lips in contact with the bearing rings. They are suitable for enclosed spaces, such as oil-bath-lubricated gearbox housings, where external housing seals protect the bearing from dirt and the lubricant reaches the rolling elements directly.
The component is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. The 100Cr6 material and the dimensionally stable steel sheet cage retain their dimensions and strength within this temperature range. This requires the use of a lubricant that is approved for the relevant operating temperature.
In this design, the rolling elements are guided by a sheet steel cage. Sheet steel cages are characterised by their low weight combined with high strength, and are resistant to common industrial lubricants based on mineral oil or synthetic oils.
P0 is the standard tolerance class for industrial roller bearings, comparable to the US ABEC 1 classification. It defines limit values for concentricity, dimensional accuracy and shape accuracy, which are designed for common industrial applications in mechanical engineering.
