The FAG N218 -E-XL-M1-C3 single-row cylindrical roller bearing, with a 90 mm bore, offers high radial load-carrying capacity and axial length compensation when used as a non-locating bearing.
The N218 -E-XL-M1-C3 cylindrical roller bearing is designed to accommodate high radial loads in demanding industrial drives. With key dimensions of a 90 mm bore, 160 mm outer diameter and 30 mm width, this FAG rolling bearing complies with tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. Designed as an open bearing, it can be integrated directly into housing-side lubrication circuits. The N design allows unimpeded longitudinal displacement of the shaft relative to the housing thanks to the flangeless outer ring.
The design as a floating bearing accommodates high radial loads and compensates for axial length changes in the shaft. As the outer ring is designed to be removable on both sides, the inner and outer rings can be fitted separately. This modular design simplifies installation and maintenance in compact assemblies. In bearing arrangements based on the fixed-floating principle, the bearing compensates axially for operational thermal shaft expansion.
The version with the M1 brass cage ensures precise guidance of the rolling elements, particularly under high acceleration or vibration loads. In combination with the slightly increased radial clearance (C3), the design helps to prevent thermal seizure caused by temperature differences between the shaft and the housing. The permissible operating temperature range is from –30 to +150 degrees Celsius. When designing the system, it must be borne in mind that the open bearing, which has no groove or lubrication bore on the outer ring, relies on a suitable external housing seal.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 160 mm and a width of 30 mm. These standardised key dimensions correspond to tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. Before fitting, you should carefully adjust the mounting dimensions of the shaft and the housing bore to these values.
In the N design, the inner ring has two fixed guide flanges, whilst the outer ring is manufactured without flanges. This allows the outer ring to move freely in both directions axially over the cylindrical rollers. The bearing accommodates radial loads only and compensates for temperature-induced changes in the shaft’s length without any axial constraint forces.
The M1 brass cage guides the single-row cylindrical rollers with precision and maintains a uniform spacing between them. The brass version offers high mechanical strength and is resistant to dynamic forces. This means the cage is designed for demanding operating conditions involving vibrations or sudden changes in speed.
The designation C3 indicates a larger radial bearing clearance than in the standard version. This increased clearance between the cylindrical rollers and the raceways compensates for fit allowances during press-fitting and for thermal expansion during operation. The risk of unacceptable stress in the bearing rings is correspondingly reduced in bearing arrangements subject to thermal stress.
The temperature range specified for this component is between -30 and +150 degrees Celsius. The dimensional stability of the rings and the brass cage reliably covers this range. When commissioning the unit, ensure that you select a lubricant whose thermal operating limits fully cover the operating temperature at the bearing location.
As the bearing is supplied without factory-fitted sealing washers, the housing must be sealed externally to prevent the ingress of dirt and moisture. Lubrication can be carried out using either oil or roller bearing grease. As the outer ring is designed without a lubrication bore, the lubricant is supplied directly into the rolling element chamber from the side.
