The SKF NU224 ECJ/C3 cylindrical roller bearing, measuring 120 × 215 × 40 mm, is a single-row idler bearing with C3 clearance, designed to accommodate high radial loads.
The NU224 ECJ/C3 cylindrical roller bearing is designed to withstand high radial loads in continuous industrial operation. With a bore of 120 mm, an outer diameter of 215 mm and a width of 40 mm, this roller bearing is suitable for solid shaft designs. SKF equips this product with an optimised internal design and a guided sheet steel cage. As an open design without sealing washers, the bearing can be easily integrated into existing lubrication systems.
This roller bearing functions as a classic floating bearing for shafts where axial length changes must be compensated for within the bearing without constraint. The outer ring guides the roller set between two fixed flanges, whilst the inner ring is flangeless and removable from both sides. In industrial bearing arrangements, this design serves to compensate for heat-induced expansion of the shaft. Pure radial forces are supported by the line contact of the cylindrical rollers, which provides high rigidity.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. This design prevents the rollers from jamming when tight fits or temperature differences between the inner and outer rings reduce the operating clearance. The bearing covers a temperature range from -30 to +150 degrees. Dimensional accuracy to P0 or ABEC 1, combined with increased running accuracy to P6 or ABEC 3, ensures precise concentricity.
The NU design features two fixed flanges on the outer ring and a flangeless inner ring. This allows the inner ring to be removed from either side, which facilitates the separate installation of both bearing rings. In practice, the component functions purely as a non-locating bearing, allowing axial movement of the shaft relative to the housing without causing internal stresses.
The bearing has an internal diameter of 120 mm, an external diameter of 215 mm and a width of 40 mm. These standardised key dimensions enable it to be fitted precisely onto corresponding shaft seats and into suitable housing bores in heavy machinery manufacturing.
Bearing clearance group C3 offers a greater radial clearance than the standard specification. This reserve compensates for any reduction in diameter that occurs when the rings are pressed onto the shaft and housing. Furthermore, the increased bearing clearance helps to ensure that the bearing continues to run with low friction and sufficient operating clearance, even when it heats up during operation.
The steel sheet cage, designated ECJ, maintains a uniform spacing between the cylindrical rollers and prevents the rolling elements from coming into contact with one another. The sheet metal design combines a low weight with dimensional stability. It is suitable for use within the permissible temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees.
As the bearing is manufactured without integrated seals, lubrication must be provided via the housing or an external lubrication system. The outer ring has no groove or lubrication bore. Depending on the machine’s requirements, the rolling bearing can be operated using grease or via an oil circuit.
The dimensional accuracy of the bore and the outer diameter complies with tolerance class P0 (comparable to ABEC 1). The running accuracy is governed by the tighter tolerance class P6 (corresponding to ABEC 3). This combination ensures smooth concentricity with standardised fit accuracy at the mating surfaces.
