The FAG NU2234 -E-XL-M1-C3 cylindrical roller bearing, measuring 170 × 310 × 86 mm, accommodates high radial forces caused by thermal expansion.
This single-row cylindrical roller bearing NU2234 -E-XL-M1-C3 from FAG functions purely as a non-locating bearing for heavy-duty industrial applications. Thanks to the line contact between the cylindrical rollers and the raceways, the design can withstand high radial loads. As the inner ring has no flanges, it can be removed from either side. This allows both bearing rings to be fitted separately and compensates for axial changes in shaft length directly within the bearing without any binding.
Typical applications are found in mechanical engineering and in large industrial drives where high radial forces act on the bearing arrangement. Due to its design, the NU type accommodates radial loads only, meaning that the axial guidance of the shaft is provided separately by an additional fixed bearing. The solid brass cage withstands severe vibrations and high acceleration forces, and guides the cylindrical rollers with dimensional stability even at varying speeds.
The version with increased radial clearance (C3) helps to ensure that the bearing does not become distorted when heated or when fitted with a tight interference fit. The permissible temperature range is from –30 to +150 degrees Celsius. As the outer ring is designed without a lubrication groove or lubrication bore and the bearing has no integrated seals, the lubricant is supplied directly via the housing. The component complies with tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1.
With an internal diameter of 170 mm, an external diameter of 310 mm and a width of 86 mm, this version has standardised main dimensions. These allow for a precise fit when installed in housing bores and on suitable shaft seats in mechanical engineering.
The NU design is a thrust bearing with two fixed flanges on the outer ring and a flangeless inner ring. This allows the inner ring to be withdrawn from both ends, enabling the two rings to be fitted separately and compensating for thermal linear expansion of the shaft.
Increased radial bearing clearance of class C3 serves to compensate for temperature-induced dimensional changes between the shaft and the housing, as well as for any constrictions caused by tight-fit seats. This ensures that the bearing rotates freely even when thermal expansion occurs during operation.
The permissible operating temperature range is from -30 to +150 degrees Celsius. As this is an open cylindrical roller bearing without integrated contact seals, the actual operating limit depends largely on the temperature resistance of the externally supplied lubricant.
As this design features no factory-fitted seal and no lubrication groove or lubrication bore on the outer ring, it requires an external supply. The supply of lubricant (oil or grease) and protection against dirt and moisture must be provided by the surrounding housing structure.
As a solid cage, the M1 version, made of brass, guides the cylindrical rollers stably even under severe vibrations and high dynamic forces. Brass offers favourable emergency running properties and is suitable for demanding thermal and mechanical loads in continuous industrial use.
