The FAG NUP2228 -E-XL-M1-C3 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row fixed bearing with a brass cage, measuring 140 × 250 × 68 mm, designed for high radial loads.
The FAG NUP2228 -E-XL-M1-C3 cylindrical roller bearing, as a single-row rolling bearing, withstands high radial loads. Thanks to its NUP design, this bearing guides the shaft axially in both directions and thus acts as a fixed bearing. With main dimensions of 140 mm bore, 250 mm outside diameter and 68 mm width, this version without an integrated seal is used in lubricated housings. The solid brass cage guides the cylindrical rollers with precision.
Design engineers primarily use this fixed bearing where, in addition to high radial forces, axial guiding forces act on both sides. The combination of an inner ring with a fixed flange and a loose flange disc serves to axially fix the shaft. Thanks to the brass cage, this design is suitable for high dynamic loads and vibrations. The permissible temperature range of –30 to +150 degrees allows for use in demanding industrial bearing arrangements.
The increased C3 bearing clearance compensates for thermal expansion when significant temperature differences arise between the inner and outer rings during operation. This ensures that the bearing runs without seizing, even when heated. The M1 brass cage is characterised by high mechanical stability. As this is an open bearing with no groove or lubrication bore in the outer ring, the lubricant is supplied from the bearing environment. The bearing is rated to class P0 or ABEC 1.
The roller bearing has an inside diameter of 140 mm, an outside diameter of 250 mm and a width across flats of 68 mm. These dimensions correspond to the standardised dimensions for cylindrical roller bearings of this size and define the required installation space on the shaft and within the housing.
The NUP design features two fixed flanges on the outer ring, one fixed flange on the inner ring and a separate flange disc. Thanks to this design, the bearing can accommodate not only high radial forces but also axial guidance forces in both directions, and acts as a fixed bearing in the bearing arrangement.
The suffix C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This additional radial clearance prevents the rolling elements from becoming jammed if tight fits or operational heating cause the inner ring to expand relative to the outer ring.
The brass cage, designated M1, is characterised by its high mechanical stability. It guides the cylindrical rollers reliably even under dynamic inertial forces or vibrations and is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees.
This open bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. As no elastic sealing washers are fitted, the actual operating limits during service are determined primarily by the thermal resistance of the lubricant supplied and the seals in the surrounding structure.
As the ex-works version does not have its own sealing washers, the bearing housing requires external sealing elements such as shaft seals or labyrinth seals in the housing cover. These external seals protect the rolling element system from the ingress of contaminants and moisture and keep the lubricant within the bearing chamber.
