The SKF NU2209 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing, designed as a non-locating bearing with a 45 mm bore, can accommodate high radial loads.
The NU2209 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row radial roller bearing from SKF with an optimised internal design. Thanks to the line contact between the cylindrical rollers and the raceways, this design can handle high radial loads whilst maintaining good rigidity. The NU design features two fixed flanges on the outer ring, whilst the flangeless inner ring remains removable from both sides. With compact key dimensions of a 45 mm bore, 85 mm outer diameter and 23 mm width, this open bearing is suitable for designs with separate lubrication.
In rotating machinery, this design is primarily used as a conventional idler bearing. As the inner ring has no flanges, the bearing compensates for axial length changes of the shaft relative to the housing with low friction directly inside the bearing. The integrated polyamide cage guides the rollers quietly and is suitable for operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +120 degrees. The design is intended for bearing locations where purely radial loads occur and axial guidance is provided by a separate fixed bearing.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial clearance compared with the standard version. This increased internal clearance counteracts stress on the rolling elements when temperature differences arise between the inner and outer rings during operation, or when tight fits on the shaft and housing reduce the bearing clearance after installation. In conjunction with dimensional accuracy to tolerance class P0 (ABEC 1) and improved running accuracy to P6 (ABEC 3), the rolling bearing ensures smooth running characteristics even under demanding thermal conditions.
In the NU design, the outer ring guides the rollers between two fixed flanges, whilst the inner ring is manufactured without flanges. This allows the inner ring to be withdrawn from both sides, which facilitates the separate installation of both bearing rings. At the same time, this design principle allows axial shaft misalignment to be compensated for without constraint directly within the rolling bearing.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 45 mm, an outside diameter of 85 mm and a total width of 23 mm. The outer ring has no groove or lubrication bore. These standardised key dimensions enable a precise fit in standardised housing bores and on precision-machined shaft seats in mechanical engineering.
The ECP suffix indicates two key design features: the letter E stands for an optimised internal design with increased load-carrying capacity achieved through larger or additional rollers. The suffix CP describes a polyamide cage which guides the cylindrical rollers precisely, dampens operating noise and minimises friction losses.
Bearing clearance group C3 offers greater radial clearance than standard bearing clearance. With tighter shaft or housing fits, the inner ring expands or the outer ring is compressed, thereby reducing the target operating clearance. The increased bearing clearance helps to ensure that the bearing rotates freely and does not seize, even when heated during operation.
The cylindrical roller bearing is designed for an operating temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. This range is primarily limited by the material of the polyamide cage. To ensure correct operation, users must also ensure that the chosen lubricant – whether lubricating oil or grease – is suitable for the required temperature range.
The bearing combines two levels of precision: The dimensional accuracy corresponds to the standard tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1. The running accuracy of the raceways meets the tighter tolerance class P6 or ABEC 3. This combination ensures precise guidance of the rotating shaft whilst offering high cost-effectiveness in industrial mass production.
