The SKF NJ2218 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing, with dimensions of 90 × 160 × 40 mm, offers high radial load-carrying capacity and single-sided axial guidance.
The NJ2218 ECP/C3 cylindrical roller bearing is a single-row rolling bearing with an optimised internal design for demanding industrial applications. Designed as an open bearing, it is suitable for lubricated systems in which high radial forces are absorbed. The main dimensions are a bore diameter of 90 mm, an outside diameter of 160 mm and a width of 40 mm. Thanks to the NJ design, the bearing has two fixed flanges on the outer ring and one fixed flange on the inner ring, enabling it to accommodate axial forces in one direction.
In bearing arrangements with unilateral axial loads, this bearing is primarily used as a support bearing. Whilst free bearings transmit purely radial forces, the NJ design additionally accommodates axial forces in one direction. The inner ring can be removed from one side, which facilitates the separate assembly of the inner and outer rings. The bearing compensates for shaft expansion in the opposite direction without constraint through its internal axial displacement, which is designed to prevent stress build-up in the system.
The polyamide cage guides the rollers with low friction and is characterised by its low weight. Together with the increased radial clearance (C3), the bearing continues to function correctly even under operational heating or tight fits. The C3 classification offers more radial clearance than the standard version, which counteracts the rolling elements becoming jammed. The permissible temperature range is from –30 to +120 degrees Celsius. Dimensional accuracy complies with P0/PN (ABEC 1), whilst running accuracy is manufactured to tolerance class P6 (ABEC 3).
With a bore of 90 mm, an outside diameter of 160 mm and a width of 40 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised main dimensions of the NJ2218 series. These standardised dimensions allow for direct replacement in suitable housings and on corresponding shaft seats.
A characteristic feature of the NJ design is the presence of two fixed flanges on the outer ring and one fixed flange on the inner ring, which enables the bearing to function as a support bearing. In addition to heavy radial loads, it also accommodates unidirectional axial forces, whilst the inner ring remains removable from one side to facilitate installation.
Bearing clearance class C3 features increased radial bearing clearance compared with the standard version. It is recommended where operating clearance is reduced due to tight fits on the shaft or housing. Similarly, the C3 bearing clearance compensates for operational temperature differences between the inner and outer rings without causing the bearing to become stressed.
The permissible operating range is between -30 and +120 degrees Celsius. The limiting factor here is primarily the polyamide cage, which remains dimensionally stable and elastic within this range. When designing the bearing assembly, the temperature of the selected lubricant should always be matched to this range.
As this bearing is supplied in an open design without integrated seals, it requires an external lubrication system, such as oil or grease lubrication. In addition, the surrounding structure must be fitted with external seals to keep out dirt particles and prevent the lubricant from leaking out of the bearing housing.
The dimensional accuracy complies with standard class P0 or ABEC 1. For running accuracy, the tighter tolerance class P6 or ABEC 3 applies, which contributes to smooth concentricity and precise guidance of the shaft during operation.
