The SKF NU220 ECJ/C3 cylindrical roller bearing, a single-row idler bearing measuring 100x180x34 mm, accommodates very high radial forces whilst allowing for thermal linear expansion.
This single-row cylindrical roller bearing, the NU220 ECJ/C3, is designed for industrial applications involving purely radial loads. Thanks to the line contact between the cylindrical rollers and the raceways, the design can withstand high radial forces. The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements precisely at medium to high speeds. As an open bearing without an integrated seal, the bearing can be flexibly connected to external lubrication systems using oil or grease.
This design is suitable for rotating systems in which high radial loads act on rigid shafts whilst axial displacements also occur. The NU design features two fixed flanges on the outer ring, whilst the inner ring is flangeless. As a result, the bearing assembly compensates for temperature-induced changes in the shaft’s length directly in the rolling element area without any constraint. In appropriate designs, the component acts purely as a non-locating bearing and prevents undesirable axial stresses in the overall bearing arrangement.
The combination of a removable inner ring and increased bearing clearance simplifies assembly and design. As the inner ring can be removed from both sides, the inner and outer rings can be mounted separately onto the shaft and in the housing. The slightly increased C3 radial clearance compensates for the reduction in bearing clearance caused by operation, either when tight bearing seats are selected or when temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings during operation.
With a cylindrical bore of 100 mm, an outside diameter of 180 mm and a width of 34 mm, the bearing can withstand high radial forces. Thanks to its NU design, featuring two flanges on the outer ring, it functions as a non-locating bearing that compensates for axial displacement of the shaft.
The designation C3 indicates a slightly increased radial bearing clearance compared with standard conditions. This design helps to prevent the rolling elements from becoming jammed when heat build-up during operation or interference fits on the shaft and housing reduce the radial operating clearance.
The bearing is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. In practice, the thermal operating limit of the bearing depends on the lubricant selected and the external sealing components of the surrounding structure.
The component combines dimensional accuracy in accordance with Class P0 or ABEC 1 with running accuracy in accordance with Class P6 or ABEC 3. This combination ensures precise concentricity in standardised bearing seats.
As an open cylindrical roller bearing, this design does not feature any factory-fitted sealing washers. Consequently, the housing design provides the seal against dirt and moisture, for example via external radial shaft seals or labyrinth systems, which also retain the lubricant within the bearing.
The ECJ version features a sheet steel cage and an optimised internal design. The cage maintains a uniform spacing between the cylindrical rollers, reduces friction and ensures stable guidance of the rolling elements even at varying speeds.
