The 20228 -K-MB-C3 spherical roller bearing from FAG Wälzlager, with a 140 mm bore and an outer diameter of 250 mm, provides angular misalignment compensation under high radial loads.
This single-row 20228 -K-MB-C3 spherical roller bearing absorbs high radial forces and compensates for misalignment between the shaft and housing with angular movement. Thanks to its barrel-shaped rolling elements, the bearing is particularly suitable for heavy-duty shaft mountings where deflection or misalignment occurs. The design combines standardised dimensions with high radial load-carrying capacity under demanding operating conditions.
The main function of this bearing is to accommodate high radial forces whilst allowing for misalignment of the bearing axis. In the case of shafts subject to elastic deflection, the spherical outer ring raceway counteracts harmful edge pressures on the rolling elements. The solid brass cage guides the rollers stably within the raceway, even in the presence of vibrations or shock-like radial forces. As the bearing is of an open design, lubricant can circulate freely within the housing and dissipate heat.
The tapered inner ring bore with a taper ratio of 1:12 allows for a fixed mounting directly onto tapered shaft seats or, using adapter sleeves, onto cylindrical shafts. When pushed axially onto the taper, the inner ring expands, which reduces the internal bearing clearance during operation. The factory-set C3 bearing clearance compensates for this reduction and allows sufficient room for thermal expansion within a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees Celsius.
This single-row roller bearing combines radial support with the ability to compensate for shaft misalignment. The barrel-shaped rollers run in a hollow spherical outer ring raceway, so that misalignment is compensated for without causing excessive edge stresses. As a result, the bearing operates smoothly in the bearing housing even when the shaft is deflected.
The bearing has a bore diameter of 140 mm, an outer diameter of 250 mm and a width across flats of 42 mm. It is manufactured to standard tolerance class P0 and has a tapered internal bore with a taper ratio of 1:12, which must be taken into account when designing the shaft.
The designation ‘K’ stands for the tapered inner ring bore with a 1:12 taper. The letters ‘MB’ denote a solid brass cage, which offers high stability under vibration. The abbreviation C3 indicates a radial bearing clearance that is greater than the standard, designed to accommodate thermal expansion and tapered sleeve movement.
When the tapered inner ring is pushed axially onto the shaft, the inner ring expands radially. This assembly process reduces the radial clearance inside the bearing. The increased initial bearing clearance (C3) ensures that, after press-fitting, sufficient operating bearing clearance remains to guarantee proper functioning.
As this spherical roller bearing does not have any integrated seals, lubrication is provided by grease or lubricating oil from the surrounding housing. Seals on the housing protect against the ingress of dirt. The open design facilitates heat exchange and the free circulation of the lubricant.
The permissible operating temperature range is from -30 to +200 degrees Celsius. Both the brass cage and the bearing rings are designed for this temperature range. When planning the bearing arrangement, care must be taken to ensure that the lubricant used is suitable for the relevant operating temperature.
