The SKF 29338 E axial self-aligning roller bearing, measuring 190 × 320 × 78 mm, accommodates high axial forces acting from one side whilst allowing for angular misalignment.
The 29338 E axial self-aligning roller bearing is an open roller bearing from SKF designed specifically to accommodate axial loads acting from one side. It combines a high axial load-carrying capacity with the design feature of compensating for manufacturing-related misalignments and shaft deflection. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6 in tolerance class P0/PN (ABEC 1), this design belongs to the SKF Explorer performance class. The standardised main dimensions are 190 mm bore, 320 mm outside diameter and 78 mm width.
This design is intended for heavy-duty bearing arrangements where dominant axial forces act on rotating shafts. Thanks to the spherical housing raceway, the roller set adjusts with angular freedom and automatically compensates for misalignment and elastic shaft deflection during operation. In addition to the main axial forces, the bearing’s design also allows it to accommodate radially acting load components, provided that a sufficient axial load is applied at the same time.
The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements and is designed for an operating temperature range of –30 to +200 degrees. As a single-direction axial bearing, the component supports loads in a defined axial direction. As axial self-aligning roller bearings are not self-retaining, the shaft ring with roller ring and housing ring can be fitted separately. To ensure slip-free operation, a minimum axial load must be maintained during operation.
With dimensions of 190 mm bore diameter, 320 mm outer diameter and 78 mm overall height, the roller bearing defines the required radial and axial installation clearance. Before installation, the shaft and housing seats must be checked against these dimensions to ensure the correct fit and design.
As a single-direction axial bearing, this design supports high axial forces from a defined direction. Owing to its design, the bearing geometry can also accommodate simultaneously acting radial forces. Thanks to the spherical raceway of the housing disc, the bearing automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation.
At SKF, the ‘Explorer’ designation denotes a refined manufacturing design based on the standard rolling bearing steel 100Cr6. This design is aimed at achieving favourable friction characteristics, improved running-in behaviour and high fatigue strength under demanding industrial operating conditions.
The material combination of 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and a sheet steel cage is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees. In practical bearing applications, the actual usable temperature limit depends largely on the thermal stability of the lubricant used.
Manufactured to tolerance class P0 or PN, this roller bearing meets the standard accuracy requirements of ABEC 1. This design offers the dimensional and concentricity accuracy required in general mechanical engineering for standardised mounting conditions.
As axial self-aligning roller bearings are not self-retaining by design, the shaft ring with roller set and the housing ring can be handled separately. This separate design makes it easier to press the bearing onto the shaft and to fit the housing ring in the case of large and heavy components.
