Axial Spherical Roller B. SKF 29428 E

The SKF 29428 E axial self-aligning roller bearing (140x280x85 mm) accommodates high axial loads on one side and compensates for misalignment during operation.

The 29428 E axial self-aligning roller bearing is a heavy-duty rolling bearing for industrial applications subject to axial loads acting from one side. Thanks to its angularly adjustable design, the unit can accommodate axial loads even when the shaft is deflected. SKF manufactures this design in the Explorer performance class from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6). A sheet steel cage guides the barrel-shaped rollers and allows for a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees.

What is the 29428 E axial-radial roller bearing suitable for?

This bearing is designed for applications where very high axial forces occur and, at the same time, angular misalignment between the shaft and housing must be compensated for. Typical applications include heavily loaded industrial gearboxes and large machinery with heavy vertical shafts. The rolling elements are positioned at an angle to the bearing axis, enabling the component to accommodate radial components of force in addition to the dominant axial forces. However, this design is not intended for purely radial loads.

What distinguishes the Explorer design and tolerance class P0/PN?

The Explorer design features optimised internal geometry and a refined surface finish at the rolling element–raceway contact. Together with the temperature-resistant sheet steel cage, the bearing is suitable for demanding lubrication conditions and continuous operating temperatures up to +200 degrees. Manufactured to standard tolerances (tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1), the unit fits into standardised housing bores and onto solid shafts. When designing the application, the minimum load required by the design must be observed to prevent the rollers from slipping.

What are the main dimensions of the 29428 E axial-spherical roller bearing?

With a bore of 140 mm, an outer diameter of 280 mm and a height of 85 mm, this bearing complies with standardised dimensions. The roller bearing consists of a shaft disc, a housing disc and the guided set of rollers in a sheet steel cage.

Can the 29428 E axial-thrust roller bearing also accommodate radial forces?

Due to the inclination of the rollers relative to the axis of rotation, this roller bearing transmits not only very high axial loads but also combined radial forces. The axial force must always constitute the predominant portion of the load. This single-sided bearing cannot accommodate purely radial loads; therefore, the bearing arrangement must be structurally supported accordingly.

How does the axial-thrust angular contact roller bearing compensate for angular misalignment?

The housing disc has a hollow spherical raceway, the centre of which lies on the bearing axis. If the shaft deflects or the housing becomes misaligned, the rollers adjust their angle together with the shaft disc. This misalignment compensation reduces edge stresses and promotes an even distribution of forces during operation.

What is the permissible temperature range for this bearing?

The bearing, made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) with a sheet steel cage, is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees. At continuous temperatures close to the upper limit, it is primarily the lubricant used that determines the thermal limit. For such conditions, select lubricants with suitable thermal stability.

Why does the bearing require a minimum axial load?

Axial-thrust roller bearings require a minimum axial force during operation to ensure that the barrel-shaped rollers roll along the raceways with a positive fit. If the shaft’s own weight and the operating load during idling are insufficient, slippage may occur, causing sliding movements. If necessary, the bearing must be preloaded using springs or shaft nuts.

What features does the Model 29428 E sheet steel cage offer?

The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements in an orderly manner and holds the set of rollers together. The sheet steel design offers high dimensional stability whilst being lightweight. It is suitable for all common industrial oils and greases within the permissible temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees.
