The FAG 52205 double-acting axial deep-groove ball bearing supports shafts with a 20 mm bore axially in both directions, with an outer diameter of 47 mm.
The 52205 axial deep-groove ball bearing from FAG Rolling Bearings is a separable axial bearing designed for purely longitudinal forces. With a bore of 20 mm, an outside diameter of 47 mm and a height of 28 mm, this design accommodates axial loads from both directions. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6, it ensures dimensional stability within a temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements evenly in both ball rings.
This double-acting bearing supports rotating shafts subjected to alternating or reciprocal axial thrusts. Via the two ball rings, the bearing guides the shaft axially in both directions within the housing. Typical applications include shaft mountings where pure axial forces from alternating directions occur and no transverse forces act on the axial bearing. This design must not be used to support pure radial loads; therefore, a separate radial bearing must be fitted in such applications.
As this model is not angle-adjustable, the mounting shoulders on the shaft and housing must be exactly perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Misalignment will quickly lead to uneven loading of the balls. The scope of supply comprises the axial bearing only, without any additional washers. The standard tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1 applies to the manufacture. Carefully adjust the bearing clearance during assembly to ensure that the unloaded ball row rolls smoothly during operation.
The bore measures 20 mm, the outer diameter 47 mm and the overall width 28 mm. These standardised key dimensions determine the required installation space on the shaft and within the bearing housing. Due to its two-piece design, the bearing is taller than one-piece thrust bearings of the same series.
A double-acting axial bearing has two separate rows of balls and three bearing rings. It absorbs axial forces in both directions along the shaft axis and supports the shaft on both sides. In contrast, single-acting bearings can only support axial forces in one direction.
FAG manufactures the bearing rings and rolling elements from standard 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel. This chromium steel offers high dimensional stability under load. The integrated sheet steel cage keeps the balls at a distance, whilst the entire component is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +150 degrees.
This model is not angle-adjustable and is sensitive to misalignment. The mounting surfaces on the shaft and housing must be aligned perpendicular to the axis of rotation. Misalignment leads to localised overloads on the rolling elements. To compensate for misalignment, versions with spherical housing washers and matching shims would be required instead.
The bearing complies with tolerance class P0 or PN as defined by the relevant standards, which corresponds to ABEC 1 in the Anglo-American system. This denotes the standard tolerance for dimensional and running accuracy in mechanical engineering. It defines the standard deviation limits for manufacture and installation.
Due to their design, axial deep-groove ball bearings can only accommodate axial forces. A radial load causes the balls to tilt and leads to premature wear. In designs subject to combined loads, the 52205 is therefore always combined with a separate radial bearing, which fully absorbs the transverse forces acting on the shaft.
