The SKF 51120 axial deep-groove ball bearing accommodates unilateral axial forces on shaft diameters of 100 mm and has an outside diameter of 135 mm and a width of 25 mm.
The SKF 51120 axial deep groove ball bearing is a separable rolling bearing designed to support purely axial loads from one direction. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6), the component provides axial support for vertically or horizontally mounted shafts. The assembly consists of a shaft ring, a housing ring and a guided set of rolling elements in a sheet steel cage. At operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +150 degrees, the thrust bearing maintains its dimensional stability in demanding industrial environments.
Designs in mechanical and plant engineering utilise this axial bearing when high axial forces act on the shaft in one direction. As the bearing is not designed for radial loads, it is installed in combination with separate radial bearings. The open design allows direct access of lubricant – oil or grease – from within the surrounding unit.
The 51120 axial deep-groove ball bearing is not angularly adjustable and is supplied without a shim. Right-angled and flat mating surfaces on the shaft and housing are therefore essential to prevent edge stresses on the rolling elements. In the event of misalignment or shaft deflection, the design does not compensate for any angular misalignment. Compliance with tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1, when correctly installed, ensures smooth running across the entire circumference of the balls.
The thrust bearing has a bore of 100 mm for a precise shaft fit. The outer diameter is 135 mm, with a height of 25 mm. These standardised dimensions make it easier for designers and maintenance engineers to carry out targeted replacements in existing assemblies.
No, this bearing is designed exclusively for axial loads. If additional radial forces occur during operation, separate radial bearings, such as deep-groove ball bearings or cylindrical roller bearings, must absorb these forces. Applying a radial load to the axial bearing leads to stress concentrations and reduces its service life.
Tolerance class P0 (equivalent to PN and ABEC 1) defines the standard accuracy for dimensional and running accuracy of rolling bearings. It meets the requirements of industrial practice in mechanical engineering, provided there are no specific requirements for high precision or concentricity tolerances.
Thanks to its construction from 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and its design featuring a sheet steel cage, the permissible temperature range is between -30 and +150 degrees Celsius. For operation at the temperature limits, the lubricant used must be suitable for this temperature range.
The bearing has a flat housing washer and rests directly on the machined flat surface of the housing. No additional spherical washer is provided to compensate for misalignment; consequently, precisely right-angled housing seats are required for the bearing to function correctly.
The integrated sheet steel cage keeps the balls at a defined distance from one another and guides them along the raceway. This prevents the rolling elements from coming into contact with one another, which reduces friction and heat build-up in the bearing and makes assembly easier.
