The SKF 51218 axial deep-groove ball bearing accommodates unilateral axial forces for shaft diameters of 90 mm and guides the shaft in the axial direction.
The 51218 axial deep-groove ball bearing is designed as a separable bearing. It consists of a shaft ring, a housing ring, and the ball and cage seats. This design facilitates assembly, as the components can be fitted onto the shaft and into the housing one after the other. Manufactured from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6), this thrust bearing is suitable for a temperature range of –30 to +150 degrees. The sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements in their raceways.
The bearing is specifically designed to accommodate pure axial forces from a single direction. Due to its design, this version cannot transmit radial forces, which is why a separate radial bearing arrangement is required. As it is manufactured to standard tolerance class P0 (equivalent to PN and ABEC 1), the component is suitable for bearing arrangements in general mechanical engineering where axial loads are transmitted to the housing.
As this model is not angle-adjustable, the bearing arrangement requires perpendicular contact surfaces on the shaft and housing. Otherwise, misalignment will lead to localised edge loads on the raceways, which accelerates wear. The bearing is designed without a shim; the flat housing washer rests directly against the housing shoulder. In the open design, an external housing seal protects the lubricant from dirt and moisture.
Designed to transmit single-sided axial forces, the bearing has a bore diameter of 90 mm, an outer diameter of 135 mm and a width of 35 mm. It is made of roller bearing steel (100Cr6) with a sheet steel cage and is designed for an operating temperature range of -30 to +150 degrees.
Due to their design, axial deep-groove ball bearings of this type can only transmit axial forces along the shaft axis. For radial loads, an additional radial bearing must be incorporated into the design to ensure that no transverse forces act on the axial raceways.
This design does not compensate for angular misalignment, as it is not angle-adjustable. The contact surfaces on the shaft and the housing shoulder must be machined at right angles to the axis of rotation in order to prevent uneven loading of the raceways.
The axial bearing is manufactured to the standard tolerance class P0, which corresponds to the designations PN and ABEC 1. This design meets the usual dimensional and concentricity requirements for standard applications in mechanical engineering.
As the bearing is of an open design with no integrated seal, the lubricant must be applied during assembly. The housing should be fitted with an external seal to prevent lubricant loss and contamination.
