SKF single-row angular contact ball bearing 7224 BM with a brass cage, a 40-degree contact angle and main dimensions of 120 × 215 × 40 mm, designed for combined loads.
The SKF 7224 BM angular contact ball bearing is a single-row rolling bearing designed for combined loads in demanding industrial applications. With a bore of 120 mm, an outside diameter of 215 mm and a width of 40 mm, this design is suitable for solid shaft guides. The bearing is made from standard rolling-element bearing steel (100Cr6) and operates to standard tolerance P0 or ABEC 1. With its open design and standard radial clearance, lubrication can be specifically integrated into the overall design of the respective assembly.
The 7224 BM angular contact ball bearing simultaneously accommodates radial forces and high axial forces in one direction. The nominal contact angle of 40 degrees gives the bearing a high axial load-carrying capacity, which is why it is primarily used in bearing arrangements subject to axial forces acting from one side. As single-row angular contact ball bearings support axial forces in only one direction, they are often fitted in a set-up configuration against a second rolling bearing. In this way, designers create a zero-backlash or specifically preloaded bearing arrangement for precisely guided shafts.
The solid brass cage gives the bearing high mechanical stability under demanding operating conditions. The brass design withstands severe vibrations and shock loads and is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees. As this is an open bearing without an integrated seal, the lubricant is selected to suit the operating speed and environment. The seal is provided by the surrounding bearing housing.
This single-row roller bearing has an inner diameter of 120 mm, an outer diameter of 215 mm and a width of 40 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical, with no groove or flange. Thanks to these standardised dimensions in accordance with P0 tolerance, the bearing can be fitted precisely into housing bores and onto suitable shaft seats.
The contact angle defines the angle at which forces are transmitted between the rolling elements and the raceways of the inner and outer rings. With a contact angle of 40 degrees, the angular contact ball bearing is specifically designed to accommodate high axial forces in one direction. To accommodate axial forces in both directions, a mirror-image arrangement with a mating bearing is required.
The bearing is specified for operating temperatures between -20 and +150 degrees. Both the raceways and balls, made from 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel, and the brass cage retain their shape and dimensional accuracy within these limits. When selecting a bearing, users should ensure that the chosen lubricant is approved for the intended temperature range.
An open design without integrated sealing washers allows circulating oil to flow directly through or specific lubricating greases to be introduced into the housing. This facilitates a continuous supply of lubricant in complex machine designs. In terms of design, the bearing housing must be protected against contamination and moisture by means of external housing seals.
The model is manufactured with standard radial bearing clearance. However, in the case of single-row angular contact ball bearings, the actual operating clearance – or preload – is only established during installation as a result of the axial alignment against the mating bearing. This allows the bearing stiffness to be specifically adapted to the individual requirements of the machine.
The standard rolling bearing steel 100Cr6 offers high hardness and wear resistance under cyclic rolling loads. Rings and rolling elements made from this heat-treated steel are characterised by dimensional stability and fatigue strength. This makes the material suitable for demanding industrial applications involving continuous operation within the specified temperature range.
