The FAG 7220 -B-XL-TVP angular contact ball bearing, with dimensions of 100 × 180 × 34 mm, accommodates radial forces as well as single-sided axial loads.
The 7220 -B-XL-TVP angular contact ball bearing is an open, single-row radial rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) with a standard radial clearance. The bearing is manufactured by FAG Wälzlager and has the standardised tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1. A characteristic feature of this design is the diagonally opposed raceways in the inner and outer rings. Designs with rotating shafts are provided with defined guidance, provided that the forces acting on them are predominantly in a specific axial direction.
This single-row bearing is used when radial forces and unidirectional axial forces act jointly on a shaft. Due to its open design without sealing rings, the component is suitable for lubricated systems in which a lubricant circulation system or oil bath supplies the bearing. As a single angular contact bearing can only accommodate axial loads in one direction, designers usually fit a second counter-bearing on the shaft to ensure axial support in the opposite direction.
The suffix ‘B’ denotes a contact angle of 40 degrees. This angle enables the component to transfer axial forces from one raceway to the other. The designation TVP stands for a polyamide cage, which guides the rolling elements and helps to dampen running noise during operation. When designing the bearing, the permissible temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees must be taken into account, as dictated by the cage material and the rolling bearing steel.
With an internal diameter of 100 mm for the shaft seat, an external diameter of 180 mm for the housing and a width of 34 mm, the bearing complies with standard dimensions. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a groove. It is manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN or ABEC 1.
The contact angle describes the line along which the contact forces between the ball and the raceway act. A contact angle of 40 degrees, indicated by the designation B, gives the bearing a high axial load capacity in one direction. At the same time, the design absorbs radial forces during operation.
The code letter TVP denotes a polyamide cage. This material is characterised by its low weight, elastic properties and quiet operation. The material limits the permissible temperature range of the bearing to between -20 and +120 degrees.
Open roller bearings do not come with integrated seals or cover plates as standard. They are designed for applications where lubrication is supplied via an external oil system or a housing grease bath. Furthermore, during maintenance work, the lubricant can be applied directly to the raceways, whilst external housing seals prevent the ingress of dirt.
Due to its design, a single single-row angular contact ball bearing can transmit axial forces in only one direction. If axial forces acting in both directions are to be accommodated, the bearing arrangement requires a pair of bearings, for example in an O or X configuration, in which each bearing bears the load in one axial direction.
This rolling bearing is manufactured with standard radial clearance. The operating clearance is established after the bearing has been pressed onto the shaft and fitted into the housing. In the case of angular contact ball bearings, the final operating clearance is often adjusted by deliberately positioning the bearing against a second bearing during assembly.
