The FAG 7220 -B-MP angular contact ball bearing, with a 100 mm bore, brass cage and a 40-degree contact angle, offers a robust solution for unilateral axial loads.
The single-row angular contact ball bearing 7220 -B-MP from FAG accommodates combined loads consisting of radial and axial forces. Thanks to its angularly arranged raceways, this rolling bearing effectively dissipates axial forces in one specific direction. Manufactured from standard rolling-element bearing steel 100Cr6, it ensures dimensional stability within a defined temperature range of –20 to +150 degrees Celsius. Designed as an open bearing, this model can be flexibly integrated into existing lubrication systems.
Typical applications can be found wherever shafts need to be both radially supported and precisely guided axially at high speeds. As single-row designs, by their very nature, can only absorb axial forces in one direction, operation usually requires a correspondingly positioned mating bearing. Designs in general mechanical engineering utilise this bearing arrangement under combined loads to reduce shaft misalignment and achieve defined axial guidance.
The suffix ‘B’ denotes a contact angle of 40 degrees, enabling the bearing to accommodate comparatively high axial forces. The solid brass cage (designation ‘MP’) guides the rolling elements precisely and proves particularly effective under demanding operating conditions and higher thermal loads. In combination with the standard radial clearance and tolerance class P0/PN, this standard design is suitable for precision industrial applications with external housing seals.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 100 mm, an outside diameter of 180 mm and a width of 34 mm. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a ring groove. These main dimensions comply with the standard metric dimensions for single-row angular contact ball bearings.
The contact angle of 40 degrees, indicated by the suffix ‘B’, describes the inclination of the line connecting the points of contact between the ball and the raceways relative to the radial plane. A larger angle increases the bearing’s axial load-carrying capacity in one direction, whilst radial forces continue to be transmitted reliably.
The cage, designated MP, is made of solid brass and guides the balls in the raceway with a high degree of stability. Brass is characterised by good emergency running properties and mechanical strength, which is particularly advantageous in the presence of vibrations, accelerations or operating temperatures of up to +150 degrees Celsius.
Open roller bearings do not come with integrated seals or cover plates fitted by the manufacturer. This design allows for free lubricant circulation in oil or relubrication systems. Sealing against dirt particles and moisture, as well as retaining the lubricant within the system, is achieved here by means of external seals in the surrounding housing structure.
The angular contact ball bearing is specified for an operating temperature range of -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. The rings and rolling elements, made from 100Cr6 bearing steel, as well as the brass cage, ensure stable dimensional accuracy within this temperature range, provided that the selected lubricant is suitable for the respective operating temperatures.
The normal radial bearing clearance corresponds to the standard range, with no increased or reduced clearance. In the case of angular contact ball bearings, however, the actual operating clearance or a desired preload is only achieved by deliberately aligning the bearing axially against a second bearing during assembly in the housing.
