The FAG 3218 angular contact ball bearing, with dimensions of 90 x 160 x 52.4 mm, can accommodate high radial loads as well as axial loads on both sides.
The FAG 3218 angular contact ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing with standard radial clearance and solid rings made from 100Cr6 bearing steel. Thanks to its internal design, this bearing unit can accommodate radial forces as well as axial forces in both directions. The open design allows for direct lubrication via the surrounding system. With the standard tolerance class P0 or ABEC 1, this version meets the basic requirements of general mechanical engineering.
This double-row bearing is suitable for applications where combined loads occur and rigid shaft guidance is required. Typical applications include rotating machine components and shaft mountings subject to axial loads on both sides. In terms of design, the double-row construction requires less installation space in the axial direction than two separate single bearings. The component is designed for operating temperatures ranging from –20 to +150 degrees Celsius.
As the 3218 angular contact ball bearing is an open design and has no integrated seals, protection against dirt and moisture must be provided by the housing design. The lubricant – grease or oil – is selected specifically to suit the ambient conditions. The built-in sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements and withstands thermal stresses up to +150 degrees. Before installation, the mounting dimensions of the shaft (90 mm) and the housing bore (160 mm) must be checked for compatibility.
The dimensions are 90 mm internal diameter (bore), 160 mm external diameter and 52.4 mm width. The outer ring is cylindrical in design and has neither a flange nor a ring groove, which allows for flush mounting in cylindrical housing bores.
Two rows of balls enable the simultaneous absorption of radial and axial forces from two directions. The contact lines run at an angle to the radial plane. As a result, this design offers high tilting rigidity whilst having a more compact overall width compared with two separate single bearings.
As an open roller bearing, this model is designed for applications in which lubrication is provided via an external lubrication system or an oil bath. Furthermore, the open design allows for a free choice of lubricant. External sealing elements must be fitted to the housing to protect against foreign particles and moisture.
The cage, made of pressed sheet steel, evenly spaces the rolling elements apart to reduce friction and noise. Sheet steel cages offer high mechanical stability whilst being lightweight. They are resistant to common lubricants and are suitable for temperatures ranging from -20 to +150 degrees Celsius.
The roller bearing is designed with normal radial clearance (standard). This refers to the amount of internal clearance between the balls and the raceways when the bearing is in its unassembled state. Normal clearance is suitable for standard fits where there are no extreme temperature differences between the shaft and the housing.
The permissible operating temperature range is from -20 to +150 degrees Celsius. Both the 100Cr6 roller bearing steel and the sheet steel cage are designed for these conditions. When selecting the grease or oil, care must be taken to ensure that its specifications are suitable for this temperature range.
