The SKF 3201 ATN9 double-row angular contact ball bearing, measuring 12 × 32 × 15.9 mm, accommodates combined radial and axial loads in both directions.
The 3201 ATN9 angular contact ball bearing is a double-row rolling bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) with a bore of 12 mm, an outer diameter of 32 mm and a width of 15.9 mm. Thanks to its double-row design with a contact angle of 30 degrees, this bearing unit simultaneously supports radial forces and axial forces acting in both directions. SKF manufactures this version with standard radial clearance as well as in the higher tolerance class P6 or ABEC 3, which contributes to precise shaft guidance.
Design engineers use the double-row angular contact ball bearing 3201 ATN9 wherever rigid bearing arrangements are required in confined spaces and single-row bearing pairs would take up too much width. The bearing absorbs tilting moments and guides shafts axially in both directions. Typical applications include compact shaft mountings with combined load directions and high demands on axial guidance. As this is an open bearing without integrated seals, it is used in lubricated housings.
Before installation, the ambient conditions and lubrication must be determined. The polyamide cage and the 100Cr6 material limit the permissible temperature range to between –20 and +120 degrees Celsius. As the bearing is of an open design, a clean housing with external sealing helps to protect against the ingress of dirt. It should also be noted that the bearing offers increased precision in accordance with tolerance class P6 or ABEC 3. The standard design of the outer ring, which has no groove, requires a precise axial fit in the housing seat.
The bearing has an inside diameter of 12 mm, an outside diameter of 32 mm and a width across flats of 15.9 mm. With these standardised dimensions, it corresponds to the 3201 series and can be fitted directly as a compact double-row roller bearing provided the shaft and housing seats are suitable.
The designation ATN9 refers to a polyamide cage. This material guides the rolling elements of both rows of balls with low friction and is characterised by its low weight and smooth running. The permissible temperature range is between –20 and +120 degrees Celsius, which is sufficient for many industrial applications with a standard lubrication supply.
Open angular contact ball bearings do not come with integrated cover plates or sealing washers fitted by the manufacturer. This design allows unimpeded access for lubricant, for example in the case of oil lubrication within enclosed housings. The user is responsible for lubricating the bearing during installation and must ensure protection against contamination and moisture by means of housing seals.
The contact angle determines the line of action of the forces between the raceways and the balls in rolling contact. With a nominal contact angle of 30 degrees, the double-row bearing transmits both considerable radial forces and axial loads from both directions. This makes the design particularly well-suited for the precise guidance of shafts against axial displacement.
The designation P6 or ABEC 3 indicates improved concentricity and dimensional accuracy compared with the standard tolerance. Tighter tolerance ranges for bore, outer diameter and axial runout contribute to low-vibration operation. This promotes smooth running at higher speeds and requires correspondingly precisely machined bearing seats on the shaft and housing.
The bearing is designed for a specified temperature range of -20 to +120 degrees Celsius. These limits are determined by the thermal resistance of the polyamide cage and the standard rolling-bearing steel 100Cr6. Within this range, the bearing material retains its dimensional stability, provided that the lubricant used is also suitable for the respective operating temperature.
