The SKF 31308 tapered roller bearing, with main dimensions of 40 × 90 × 25.25 mm, offers a high load-carrying capacity for combined radial and axial loads in mechanical engineering.
The SKF 31308 tapered roller bearing is a single-row rolling bearing that accommodates high radial forces whilst also withstanding unidirectional axial forces. In the complete bearing version, the unit consists of an inner ring with a roller-guided tapered roller set and a separate outer ring. Thanks to the SKF Explorer performance class, this version features optimised internal geometries and refined surfaces that reduce friction and enhance operational reliability.
The 31308 tapered roller bearing is primarily used in shaft mountings subject to combined loads in industrial machinery and plant engineering. As single-row tapered roller bearings, by design, can only accommodate axial forces in one direction, they are usually fitted in pairs in an O or X arrangement with a second mating bearing. This arrangement provides precise support for shafts and absorbs alternating axial forces, whilst the integrated sheet steel cage guides the tapered rollers along the raceway.
This bearing is fitted with a sheet steel cage designed for a temperature range of -30 to +120 degrees. The tolerance class P0/PN (corresponding to ABEC 1) offers standard precision in accordance with industry standards for fits on the shaft and housing. As the inner and outer rings are separable, assemble the bearing components separately. This considerably simplifies installation and the adjustment of the required operating or preload clearance during assembly.
With a bore diameter of 40 mm, an outside diameter of 90 mm and a total width of 25.25 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised dimensions for metric tapered roller bearings. This allows for direct replacement in existing housing designs.
SKF’s Explorer class features an improved internal geometry of the raceways and rollers, as well as consistent material qualities. These modifications reduce internal friction, minimise heat build-up during operation and contribute to a longer fatigue life under demanding conditions.
Single-row tapered roller bearings such as the 31308 are not self-retaining. The inner ring, together with the roller cage, and the outer ring can be fitted separately. During installation, two bearings are positioned against each other in order to precisely set the required bearing clearance or a defined preload in the shaft system.
The permissible operating temperature range is from -30 to +120 degrees. Within these limits, the bearing retains its dimensional stability. When selecting a suitable grease or lubricating oil, care must be taken to ensure that the lubricant is also specified for this temperature range.
The sheet steel cage guides and spaces the tapered rolling elements on the inner ring raceway. It prevents direct contact between the rollers and ensures even load distribution. At the same time, it leaves sufficient space for the lubricant to circulate inside the bearing.
With a tolerance class of P0 or PN (corresponding to ABEC 1), the bearing meets the standard manufacturing precision requirements for industrial roller bearings. This ensures a precise fit on standard shafts and in matching housing bores.
