The SKF 30218 tapered roller bearing accommodates combined radial and axial loads, with overall dimensions of 90 x 160 x 32.5 mm.
This single-row SKF 30218 tapered roller bearing corresponds to the standard design in the Explorer performance class. The design features tapered rollers and raceways, the tips of which meet at a common point on the axis of rotation. This makes the bearing suitable for simultaneously accommodating high radial forces and single-direction axial forces in industrial drive trains and bearing arrangements.
This rolling bearing is primarily used where shaft guides must withstand high mechanical stresses caused by combined loads. Typical applications include gearbox shafts and axle bearings in stationary industrial plant. As single-row tapered roller bearings, by design, can only accommodate axial loads in one direction, in practice they are usually fitted in pairs with a second bearing mounted in the opposite direction. This arrangement provides axial guidance for the shaft on both sides and allows the axial bearing clearance to be adjusted.
This complete tapered roller bearing features a sheet steel cage that maintains an even spacing between the rollers and guides them. The permissible operating temperature range extends from –30 to +120 degrees Celsius, making the bearing suitable for typical thermal conditions in enclosed gearboxes. Manufactured to tolerance class P0/PN (equivalent to ABEC 1), the component meets standard mechanical engineering requirements for dimensional and concentricity accuracy. As the inner ring, together with the roller set, and the outer ring can be separated from one another, both bearing rings can be fitted in stages and independently of one another.
With a bore of 90 mm, an outside diameter of 160 mm and a total width of 32.5 mm, the bearing complies with the standardised main dimensions. These dimensions allow for direct replacement in existing gearboxes, bearing housings or shaft mountings of the same size.
The tapered roller geometry transmits both radial and axial forces simultaneously. However, the single-row roller bearing only supports axial loads from one direction. To secure the shaft axially on both sides, the design therefore requires a second bearing positioned in the opposite direction.
The permissible temperature range for the 30218 tapered roller bearing is between –30 and +120 degrees Celsius. This operating range is determined by the material’s stability and the standard sheet-steel cage, which maintains the roller guidance even under thermal stress.
P0 or PN denotes the standard tolerance for rolling bearings and corresponds to the ABEC 1 classification. Bearings in this accuracy class meet the standard requirements of mechanical engineering in terms of concentricity, dimensional accuracy and shape stability.
Single-row tapered roller bearings are not of a self-retaining design. The inner ring, with its pre-mounted roller cage, can be handled separately from the outer ring. This design facilitates step-by-step installation into housings and onto shafts.
Bearings in the SKF Explorer series are based on a carefully optimised internal design and machined contact surfaces between the rollers and raceways. These design features promote the formation of a lubricating film and reduce friction losses during operation.
