The SKF 23038 CCK/W33 spherical roller bearing, measuring 190 × 290 × 75 mm and featuring a tapered bore, provides a robust bearing solution for heavy-duty shaft assemblies.
The 23038 CCK/W33 self-aligning roller bearing is an open roller bearing made from classic standard bearing steel 100Cr6 for demanding industrial applications. It withstands high radial forces and automatically compensates for misalignment or shaft deflection during operation. Manufactured to the SKF Explorer performance class, this double-row roller bearing combines standard dimensional accuracy (PN) with increased running accuracy to tolerance class P5.
This self-aligning roller bearing is primarily used in heavier industrial applications subject to high radial and combined forces. The design is suitable for bearing locations where elastic shaft deflection occurs under load or where misalignment between the bearing housings needs to be compensated for. The sheet steel cage reliably guides the barrel-shaped rollers even during dynamic speed changes. Thanks to its temperature range of –30 to +200 degrees, the design remains dimensionally stable and operational under thermal stress.
The suffix ‘K’ denotes the tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. This design allows for direct mounting on tapered shaft seats or, using clamping and withdrawal sleeves, on cylindrical shafts. Fitters adjust the standard radial bearing clearance to suit the application via the axial slide-on travel. The W33 designation indicates a lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring, allowing fresh lubricant to reach directly between the rows of rollers.
The letter combination indicates key design features of this bearing. The letter ‘K’ denotes a tapered internal bore with a 1:12 taper, which is intended for tapered seats or clamping sleeves. The designation W33 describes a lubrication groove with radial holes in the outer ring. The designation CC stands for the version with stamped sheet steel cages.
With an internal diameter of 190 mm at the bore, an external diameter of 290 mm and a width of 75 mm, the roller bearing has standardised main dimensions. These standard dimensions enable it to be fitted precisely into suitable pedestal housings and enclosed machine housings.
As an open bearing, this design is intended for installation in enclosed housings, where external housing seals protect against contamination and moisture. The open design allows for the free circulation of grease or lubricating oil, as well as targeted relubrication via the external W33 lubrication groove.
Tolerance class P5 specifies a tighter manufacturing tolerance for concentricity than the standard tolerance PN. This reduces both the radial and axial runout of the inner ring during operation. Higher running accuracy promotes smooth operation, reduces vibrations and relieves stress on connected components at medium to high speeds.
The permissible operating temperature range extends from -30 to +200 degrees. The rolling elements and rings, made from 100Cr6 bearing steel, are heat-treated accordingly, ensuring that no impermissible dimensional changes occur, even when exposed to heat. Before use, ensure that a lubricant specified for the relevant temperature range is used.
Fitting is carried out either directly onto a tapered shaft journal or, using a suitable mounting or withdrawal sleeve, onto a cylindrical shaft. As the bearing is pushed on axially, the inner ring expands in a controlled manner. This allows the remaining radial bearing clearance to be precisely adjusted to the specified dimension during installation.
