The SKF 22318 E spherical roller bearing, with a 90 mm bore and an outer diameter of 190 mm, offers high load-carrying capacity and precise compensation for misalignment.
The 22318 E self-aligning roller bearing is an open roller bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) for demanding industrial applications. With key dimensions of a 90 mm bore, 190 mm outer diameter and 64 mm width, this bearing can accommodate high radial and combined loads. The SKF version in the Explorer performance class combines dimensional accuracy in accordance with PN with the enhanced running accuracy of class P5. As a result, the rollers run with low vibration within the sheet steel cage and guide the shaft reliably even in the event of unavoidable shaft deflection.
This rolling bearing is particularly well-suited to heavy-duty industrial drives and highly loaded bearing arrangements subject to significant radial forces. Thanks to the hollow spherical raceway in the outer ring, the 22318 E spherical roller bearing automatically compensates for angular misalignment between the inner and outer rings. This design prevents damaging edge stresses when shafts deflect elastically under operating loads or when misalignment errors arising from the manufacturing process occur. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the rolling elements stably and withstands mechanical stresses during continuous operation.
The combination of standard dimensional accuracy PN and the tighter P5 running accuracy ensures particularly smooth concentricity with reduced vibrations. As this is an open bearing without an integrated seal, you can flexibly match the lubricant and external housing seal to your environmental conditions. The outer ring features a circumferential lubrication groove with lubrication holes, through which grease or lubricating oil is fed directly between the two rows of rollers. With a permissible temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees, the 100Cr6 bearing material can also withstand elevated operating temperatures.
In terms of design, the bearing combines a shared hollow-spherical outer ring raceway with two rows of barrel-shaped rolling elements. This design enables misalignment and shaft deflection to be compensated for without reducing the load-carrying capacity. With dimensions of 90 × 190 × 64 mm and a robust sheet steel cage, the component can withstand very heavy radial and axial forces.
Circumferential lubrication grooves and integrated bores on the outer ring allow for targeted relubrication whilst the bearing is fitted. This allows grease or lubricating oil to reach directly into the interior of the bearing, between the rows of rolling elements. This significantly simplifies maintenance in enclosed housings and ensures an even supply to both raceways.
In this version, the mounting dimensions – such as the bore, outer diameter and width – comply with the standard tolerance class PN (Normal). The running accuracy, however, is manufactured to the tighter P5 tolerance class. This results in lower run-out error, smoother running and minimised vibrations, which reduces the mechanical stress on the entire shaft and the surrounding machine components.
The approved operating temperature range is from -30 to +200 degrees. The standard 100Cr6 rolling-bearing steel used, as well as the heat-resistant sheet steel cage, retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. To ensure reliable operation, the selected lubricant must be thermally suited to the actual operating temperatures encountered.
As an open roller bearing, this variant does not feature any integrated sealing washers. This design offers engineers the freedom to select the appropriate sealing system for the bearing housing on a case-by-case basis, such as labyrinth seals or shaft seals. Furthermore, the open design allows for direct lubrication with oil or grease, as well as operation at temperatures up to +200 degrees.
With an internal diameter of 90 mm, the bearing is designed for cylindrical shaft seats with a nominal diameter of 90 mm. The outer diameter is 190 mm, with a total width of 64 mm. During installation, care must be taken to ensure a clean fit against the shaft shoulder and a correct housing fit, so as not to restrict the radial bearing clearance beyond permissible limits.
