The SKF 22234 CC/W33 open spherical roller bearing combines dimensions of 170 × 310 × 86 mm with P5 running accuracy and an integrated lubrication groove for heavy-duty industrial applications.
The 22234 CC/W33 self-aligning roller bearing can accommodate high radial loads and automatically compensates for misalignment or shaft deflection during operation. SKF manufactures this roller bearing from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel with a bore diameter of 170 mm, an outer diameter of 310 mm and a width of 86 mm. Thanks to its open design, the bearing is suitable for systems with an external lubrication supply. Two symmetrical rows of rollers and a guided sheet steel cage ensure even load distribution at operating temperatures ranging from –30 to +200 degrees Celsius.
Industrial plants and maintenance engineers prefer to use this bearing design in heavily loaded drive trains and rotating shaft mountings. Wherever shafts flex elastically or manufacturing tolerances lead to misalignment within the housing, the spherical outer ring raceway counteracts harmful edge stresses. The open bearing design allows for targeted integration into existing oil or grease circulation lubrication systems. The component is ideally suited to demanding applications in mechanical and plant engineering.
The suffix W33 denotes a circumferential lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring. This allows lubricant to reach directly between the two rows of rollers, which simplifies the relubrication process during maintenance. In addition, the tolerance class with P5 running accuracy offers more precise guidance compared to the standard. Before installation, check that there is sufficient installation space for the dimensions 170 x 310 x 86 mm, as well as a suitable connecting structure to provide external sealing of the open bearing against dirt particles.
This design features two rows of barrel-shaped rolling elements that roll on a common hollow-spherical outer ring raceway. As a result, the roller bearing compensates for misalignment between the shaft and the housing with angular movement. The CC version features window-type sheet steel cages, whilst the designation W33 denotes a lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring for direct relubrication.
With an internal diameter of 170 mm, an external diameter of 310 mm and a width of 86 mm, this bearing is suitable for heavy mechanical loads. These dimensions provide a wide contact surface for high radial forces. When designing the assembly, ensure there is sufficient clearance and that the shoulder diameters on the shaft and housing are compatible.
This classification combines the standard dimensional tolerance PN for limit dimensions such as bore and outside diameter with a tighter tolerance class, P5, for running accuracy. The concentricity of the inner and outer rings is subject to tighter tolerances than in the standard version, which reduces vibrations and improves running smoothness in rotating machinery.
The bearing, manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel, is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +200 degrees Celsius. As this is an unsealed bearing, it is primarily the chosen lubricant – grease or lubricating oil – that determines the actual thermal operating limit during operation.
A central circumferential groove and lubrication holes in the outer ring allow lubricant to be fed directly into the interior of the rolling element rows. Grease or lubricating oil is distributed symmetrically to both sets of rollers, thereby effectively displacing used lubricant. This promotes low-friction operation and simplifies regular maintenance of the bearing assembly.
As an open roller bearing, this design does not have any integrated sealing washers. Protection against contamination and the retention of lubricant must therefore be provided by the surrounding bearing housing. Typically, labyrinth seals, radial shaft seals or non-contact gap seals are used in the machine housing.
