The SKF 22228 CC/C3W33 self-aligning roller bearing (140x250x68 mm) compensates for misalignment and accommodates heavy radial loads as well as combined axial forces at elevated operating temperatures.
The SKF 22228 CC/C3W33 self-aligning roller bearing is a double-row roller bearing designed for heavy-duty industrial applications. With a bore of 140 mm, an outer diameter of 250 mm and a width of 68 mm, this open bearing reliably absorbs radial and axial forces on both sides. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 rolling-element bearing steel, the bearing operates within a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees Celsius. Two integrated sheet steel cages guide the barrel-shaped rollers into the raceways, even under high loads.
This self-aligning roller bearing is suitable for applications involving high radial forces and axial loads acting in both directions. Thanks to the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, the roller assembly automatically adjusts itself in the event of shaft deflection or misalignment. This feature reduces the build-up of edge stresses on the roller bodies. At the same time, the combination of robust geometry and a temperature-resistant sheet steel cage ensures smooth running characteristics under demanding conditions.
The C3 design features a radial clearance that is slightly greater than the standard value. This additional clearance prevents the rollers from seizing up when temperature differences occur between the inner and outer rings, or when tight fits cause the inner ring to expand. The designation W33 refers to a circumferential lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring. Maintenance personnel can use this to press fresh lubricant directly between the two rows of rollers, which simplifies the relubrication process.
The number combination 22228 denotes a spherical roller bearing with a bore diameter of 140 mm, an outer diameter of 250 mm and a width of 68 mm. The suffix CC stands for two sheet steel cages to guide the rollers. C3 indicates an increased radial clearance, whilst W33 denotes the integrated lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring.
The bearing has an inner diameter of 140 mm, an outer diameter of 250 mm and a width of 68 mm. The dimensional accuracy complies with the standard tolerance class PN, whilst the running accuracy complies with the tighter tolerance class P5.
Bearing clearance class C3 offers increased radial clearance as supplied. If the shaft and housing are a tight fit, the inner ring expands or the outer ring contracts. Furthermore, components expand at operating temperatures of up to 200 degrees Celsius. The C3 clearance accommodates these dimensional changes during operation.
The designation W33 indicates a lubrication groove and lubrication holes in the outer ring of the bearing. Grease or lubricating oil is fed into the centre of the bearing via lubrication holes in the housing. This ensures that the lubricant is distributed evenly directly between the two rows of rollers in the roller bearing.
The bearing is designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +200 degrees Celsius. The 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel used, as well as the sheet steel cages, retain their dimensional stability within this temperature range. This temperature range must also be taken into account when selecting the grease or oil.
As an open roller bearing, this design has no integrated seals. To prevent the ingress of dirt, dust or moisture and to avoid lubricant loss, the surrounding housing must be fitted with suitable external seals, such as labyrinth seals or shaft seals.
