The 22224 E spherical roller bearing from SKF Rolling Bearings features a 120 mm bore, an outer diameter of 215 mm and P5 running accuracy for combined loads in industrial applications.
The 22224 E self-aligning roller bearing is a double-row roller bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6), designed to withstand high loads. The Explorer version from SKF Rolling Bearings combines a standard radial clearance with a sheet steel cage. The open bearing measures 120 × 215 × 58 mm and is suitable for a temperature range of –30 to +200 degrees. Thanks to the crowned rollers and the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, the system automatically compensates for misalignment and elastic deflection of the shaft during operation.
In terms of design, this self-aligning roller bearing is intended for applications involving high radial forces and axial forces in both directions. The spherical raceway in the outer ring allows the rollers to self-align in the event of shaft misalignment without causing excessive edge pressures. This reduces the constraint forces that can lead to premature wear in rigid rolling bearings. For the design and maintenance of assemblies, this design provides a sound basis for mechanically compensating for angular misalignment.
The outer ring is fitted with a circumferential lubrication groove and lubrication bores. This feature directs grease or lubricating oil directly between the rows of rollers via a short path and facilitates regular relubrication via connections on the housing. Furthermore, the tolerance class with dimensional accuracy PN and running accuracy P5 helps to minimise runout deviation. The tighter tolerance of the running characteristics promotes low-vibration shaft rotation. As an open rolling bearing, installation requires a properly fitted external housing seal to protect against contaminants and moisture.
With a bore of 120 mm, an external diameter of 215 mm and a width of 58 mm, the bearing complies with standardised mounting dimensions. These dimensions allow it to be fitted onto suitable shafts and enable the direct replacement of bearing units of the same dimensions.
P5 denotes a tighter tolerance class for concentricity, whilst the dimensional accuracy corresponds to the standard PN class. This design reduces radial deviations during operation and contributes to the smooth running of the shaft mounted in bearings.
The permissible temperature range is from -30 to +200 degrees. Both the standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel and the sheet steel cage are designed for this temperature range. The lubricant used must be suitable for the same operating temperature.
Fresh lubricant flows directly into the interior to the roller sets via the lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring. This allows for relubrication whilst the bearing is in operation or at a standstill via lubrication ports on the housing.
With no integrated seals, the open design allows a free choice between grease and oil lubrication and facilitates the flow of lubricant. In this version, protection against dirt and moisture is provided by external seals in the bearing housing.
It separates the rolling elements and guides the rollers into the raceways at a uniform distance. The sheet steel cage combines mechanical stability with a compact design for the lubricant and is suitable for the entire specified temperature range.
