The SKF 22220 EK self-aligning roller bearing (100x180x46 mm) accommodates heavy radial loads and misalignment, and features an easy-to-fit tapered bore.
The SKF 22220 EK self-aligning roller bearing is a double-row roller bearing designed for demanding industrial applications involving heavy radial forces and axial loads on both sides. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel in the Explorer design, the open construction is rated for operating temperatures from –30 to +200 degrees Celsius. Thanks to the hollow spherical raceway in the outer ring, the design automatically compensates for shaft misalignment. An integrated lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring facilitates relubrication during operation.
This rolling bearing is suitable for heavy-duty applications in general mechanical engineering where shaft deflection or misalignment between the inner and outer rings occurs. Typical applications include industrial bearings subjected to high loads and misalignment between the shaft and housing. Thanks to the sheet steel cage, the bearing guides the barrel-shaped rollers with low vibration, even under high loads and at varying speeds. Designers prefer to use the open design in enclosed housings where grease or lubricating oil is supplied regularly via the outer ring.
The tapered internal bore with a taper ratio of 1:12 allows for easy mounting directly onto tapered shaft seats or, using suitable mounting and withdrawal sleeves, onto cylindrical shafts. During mounting, the standard radial bearing clearance is reduced in a controlled manner, allowing you to precisely set the required operating fit. Furthermore, this design is characterised by increased running accuracy to tolerance class P5 with standard dimensional accuracy PN. This ensures smooth concentricity in demanding industrial applications.
A self-aligning roller bearing of this design can accommodate high radial and axial loads and automatically compensates for misalignment. The SKF model 22220 EK has a tapered bore (1:12), an internal diameter of 100 mm, an external diameter of 180 mm and a width of 46 mm. It has a sheet steel cage, PN dimensional accuracy and P5 running accuracy.
The tapered bore (designation K) allows the bearing to be mounted either directly onto a tapered shaft journal or, using an adapter sleeve, onto a cylindrical shaft. When pushed on axially, the inner ring expands, allowing the bearing clearance to be adjusted to a specific value. Suitable pull-off sleeves or hydraulic tools are recommended for disassembly.
The bearing is designed for an operating temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees Celsius. The standard 100Cr6 rolling bearing steel used retains its dimensional stability within this temperature range. As this is an open bearing, the selected lubricant and external shaft seals must also be suited to the prevailing operating temperatures of the plant.
The outer ring is fitted at the factory with a circumferential lubrication groove and lubrication holes. Fresh lubricant enters directly into the space between the two rows of rollers via these openings. This ensures even distribution of grease or oil during operation and facilitates maintenance in stationary housings without the need to dismantle the bearing housing.
The P5 tolerance class relates to the running accuracy of the bearing and defines tighter limits for concentricity than the standard PN tolerance. Whilst the main dimensions correspond to the standard PN tolerance class, the P5 running accuracy ensures a smoother movement of the rolling elements, which contributes to quieter operation and reduced vibrations during use.
Open self-aligning roller bearings do not have integrated sealing washers and are suitable for mounting locations that are sealed by the machine housing. This design allows for a free choice of lubricant, enables unimpeded lubricant flow and, during assembly, can be flexibly protected against dirt and moisture using external felt, labyrinth or shaft seal rings.
