The SKF 23218 CCK/C3W33 self-aligning roller bearing is an open roller bearing measuring 90 × 160 × 52.4 mm, with a tapered bore and C3 clearance, designed for heavy-duty industrial applications.
The 23218 CCK/C3W33 self-aligning roller bearing is an open roller bearing from SKF that accommodates heavy radial and axial loads whilst compensating for misalignment. Thanks to its double-row roller arrangement, the bearing automatically compensates for misalignment between the shaft and the housing. Manufactured from standard 100Cr6 bearing steel and featuring a robust sheet steel cage, it ensures smooth operation in gearboxes and industrial drive units. With dimensions of a 90 mm bore, 160 mm outside diameter and 52.4 mm width, this bearing fits into standardised machine seats.
This rolling bearing is primarily used where high radial forces act on rotating shafts and deflection may occur. Typical applications include industrial gearboxes and industrial conveyor systems with varying shaft loads. As the open bearing has no integrated seals, it can be flexibly integrated into enclosed housing designs. A circumferential lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring facilitates targeted relubrication during operation, whilst the permissible temperature range of –30 to +200 degrees covers a wide range of operating conditions.
The design with a tapered bore at a ratio of 1:12 allows for direct mounting on tapered shaft seats or fastening using clamping and withdrawal sleeves. During assembly, the internal bearing clearance is reduced by axially sliding the inner ring onto the shaft. The factory-set increased radial bearing clearance (C3) specifically compensates for this loss of clearance as well as thermal expansion during operation. Furthermore, this bearing is characterised by increased running accuracy of class P5 with standard dimensional accuracy PN. This ensures smooth and low-vibration operation under demanding operating conditions.
With an internal diameter of 90 mm, an external diameter of 160 mm and a width of 52.4 mm, the roller bearing complies with standardised dimensions. The tapered internal bore tapers at a ratio of 1:12. These values are decisive for the dimensioning of the shaft and the selection of suitable housings or mounting sleeves.
The abbreviation CC refers to an internal design featuring pressed sheet steel cages, whilst the K denotes the tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. This design facilitates fitting onto tapered bearing seats or clamping sleeves and allows for precise adjustment of the desired residual radial bearing clearance during installation.
Bearing clearance class C3 provides a slightly higher radial clearance than the standard value. When the tapered inner ring is fitted, the bearing clearance is measurably reduced due to the elastic expansion of the ring. The C3 clearance ensures that, even after a tight fit and under operational heating, there remains sufficient clearance for smooth running.
W33 denotes a ring-shaped lubrication groove, complete with lubrication holes, in the outer ring of the roller bearing. This allows fresh lubricant to be fed directly between the two rows of rollers at maintenance intervals. This design facilitates continuous relubrication within the housing and promotes an even supply of lubricant inside the bearing.
This tolerance class combines the standard dimensional accuracy PN with the more precise running accuracy P5 in accordance with SKF specifications. Whilst the external mounting dimensions comply with the standard, concentricity and axial run-out are subject to tighter tolerance limits. This promotes smooth rolling behaviour and reduces vibrations in the drivetrain.
An operating temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees is permissible for bearings manufactured from standard roller bearing steel 100Cr6 with a sheet steel cage. As no contact seals are incorporated, the lubricant used and the external housing seals must be selected to suit the thermal and ambient operating conditions.
