The SKF 22216 EK/C3 spherical roller bearing measures 80 × 140 × 33 mm and, thanks to its tapered bore and C3 clearance, is suitable for demanding industrial applications.
The 22216 EK/C3 self-aligning roller bearing is a double-row roller bearing made from standard bearing steel (100Cr6) for demanding industrial applications involving high radial loads. Thanks to the hollow-spherical raceway in the outer ring, the design automatically compensates for misalignment and shaft deflection during operation. The open bearing features a sheet steel cage that guides the rollers. The outer ring is fitted with a lubrication groove and lubrication holes for targeted relubrication. This bearing is manufactured by SKF and is designed for a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees.
The component is primarily used in bearing arrangements where high radial forces occur and shaft misalignment needs to be compensated for. The integrated lubrication groove on the outer ring facilitates the supply of lubricant directly into the interior of the bearing assembly. As this is an unsealed bearing, designers prefer to incorporate the component into protected housings with external seals. At continuous temperatures between –30 and +200 degrees, the rolling bearing steel retains its dimensional stability.
The designation ‘K’ stands for a tapered internal bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. This design facilitates mounting on tapered shaft seats or using mounting and withdrawal sleeves. During assembly, the radial bearing clearance is reduced by the axial sliding of the inner ring. The slightly increased C3 bearing clearance class, as supplied ex works, helps to ensure that sufficient clearance remains after press-fitting and during thermal expansion in operation. Furthermore, the P5 tolerance class offers improved running accuracy compared with the standard PN.
With an internal diameter of 80 mm at the bore, an external diameter of 140 mm and a width of 33 mm, this version of the metric 22216 series is suitable for housing mountings in general mechanical engineering.
The letter K denotes a tapered bore with a standard taper ratio of 1:12, which allows for precise mounting either directly onto a tapered shaft seat or using a clamping sleeve. The designation ‘E’ indicates, specific to the manufacturer, an optimised internal design featuring a sheet steel cage, which is designed to withstand demanding radial loads.
In the case of bearings with a tapered bore, the inner ring expands elastically when pushed on axially; this is why a radial clearance class C3 – which is greater than the standard clearance – is required. Furthermore, the additional bearing clearance compensates for operational temperature differences between the inner and outer rings.
For lubrication, the outer ring features an integrated circumferential groove and lubrication holes. Lubricant can be applied directly between the two rows of rollers via these openings. As the bearing is supplied open from the factory, the bearing housing must be protected from dirt and moisture by external seals.
The P5 classification defines an increased running accuracy of the rolling elements and raceways compared with the standard PN class. This promotes smooth, low-vibration concentricity when higher demands are placed on the guiding accuracy of the shaft supported by the bearing.
Designed for operating temperatures ranging from -30 to +200 degrees, the roller bearing is made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) with a sheet steel cage. When designing the bearing assembly, care must be taken to select a lubricant that covers this temperature range.
