The SKF 22218 EK self-aligning roller bearing (90x160x40 mm) withstands high radial loads and compensates for misalignment during operation.
The 22218 EK self-aligning roller bearing is a double-row roller bearing designed for heavy-duty industrial applications involving combined loads. Thanks to the hollow-spherical outer ring raceway, the bearing can adjust its angle to compensate for shaft deflection and misalignment. This SKF Explorer version is made from standard roller bearing steel (100Cr6) and operates within a temperature range of -30 to +200 degrees. The integrated sheet steel cage guides the symmetrical rollers and keeps friction to a minimum during operation.
Bearing arrangements subjected to combined loads primarily utilise the 22218 EK self-aligning roller bearing where high radial forces are present alongside axial forces in both directions. If shaft deflection occurs under heavy loads or misalignment between the bearing positions cannot be avoided, this roller bearing automatically compensates for the misalignment. The open bearing allows for targeted lubrication with oil or grease, tailored to the specific operating parameters of the system.
The designation ‘K’ indicates a tapered bore with a standard taper of 1:12. You can mount this bearing either directly onto a tapered shaft seat or, using a suitable mounting or withdrawal sleeve, onto cylindrical shafts, which facilitates disassembly during maintenance work. Lubricant is fed directly between the rows of rollers via the lubrication groove with lubrication holes in the outer ring. The tolerance class PN for dimensional accuracy and P5 for running accuracy ensure smooth concentricity.
With a bore of 90 mm, an outside diameter of 160 mm and a width of 40 mm, this roller bearing complies with standardised key dimensions. The bore is tapered at a ratio of 1:12, which allows it to be fitted onto adapter sleeves or tapered shafts.
At SKF, the letter E denotes an optimised internal design with increased load-carrying capacity. The letter K denotes a tapered bore with a taper ratio of 1:12. This combination provides roller guidance within a sheet steel cage, whilst offering flexible mounting options on cylindrical or tapered shaft seats.
Standard radial bearing clearance (CN) indicates the condition of this bearing as supplied. The bearing clearance describes the radial play between the rollers and the raceways in a load-free state prior to installation. When the bearing is pressed onto a tapered seat, this radial play is reduced in a controlled manner; you should bear this in mind during assembly.
The permissible temperature range is between -30 and +200 degrees for the standard rolling bearing steel 100Cr6. As no elastic contact seals are fitted, the actual operating temperature limit depends largely on the thermal stability of the grease or lubricating oil used.
The outer ring has a circumferential lubrication groove with several lubrication holes. Lubricators or centralised lubrication systems feed grease or lubricating oil directly into the bearing via the outer ring. This ensures that the lubricant is distributed evenly between the two rows of rollers and effectively flushes spent lubricant out of the working area.
Tolerance class P5 specifies tighter run-out and straightness tolerances than the standard PN tolerance. This results in reduced run-out deviations and contributes to low-vibration operation, whilst the dimensional accuracy for external and internal diameters corresponds to the standard PN class.
